 Canadian citizen or permanent resident by application deadline first  Applying for support for first PhD or equivalent  The following table shows the periods of support for applicants at different stages of doctoral (or equivalent) study.  Have achieved first-class average (as defined by host university) in each of last two years of full-time study (or equivalent, if in part-time terms)  At McGill, first-class = 3.30 GPA in each of the last two years of full time studies  Includes graduate record to date (Master’s & Doctoral combined) + last year of undergraduate studies  Have not already received an award at the doctoral level from SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR  *Note: Departments may recommend an application with slightly lower GPA, but must explain compelling circumstances in Departmental Appraisal.  Applicants in qualifying year of study are not eligible to receive scholarship support Doctoral Applicant Eligibility Requirements (continued) 5

Doctoral Program Eligibility: Health-Related Applications For research in health and psychology, consult with CIHR and SSHRC before submitting 6 Eligible for SSHRCIneligible for SSHRC Social Sciences and Humanities research w/ health component, if it does not directly or indirectly impact health (i.e. impact of health-care industry on national or local economies, biographies of health practitioners, cinematic or artistic portrayal of illness in which health promotion is not the central aim Research primarily intended to improve and/or increase knowledge of health and health care systems (i.e. Socio-economic and cultural determinants of health; health promotion and therapy; health policy, management and law; humanities perspective on health such as health ethics, etc.) Research with strong health research orientation (i.e. clinical trials)

Doctoral Program Eligibility: Health-Related Applications (continued) not eligible  Research that is eligible for funding under the mandate of CIHR is not eligible for consideration at SSHRC. This includes research that is primarily intended to improve and/or increase knowledge of health, health care and health-care systems in Canada or internationally.  Applicants working in research areas where boundaries overlap are advised to state clearly in all applications for funding why they believe their proposals are appropriate for support by the agency to which they are submitting their application. Doctoral Application Policies  At the time of application, applicant does not have to be assured admission to a particular university or to a degree program  Applicant must be registered in a degree program at time of application  Applicant may only submit one application per year to either SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR Applying to multiple funding agencies may result in a cancelled applicationApplying to multiple funding agencies may result in a cancelled application If unsure which agency to apply to, contact agencies with research proposal before applyingIf unsure which agency to apply to, contact agencies with research proposal before applying 9

Doctoral Application Policies (continued) Fast-track Direct-entry Fast-track or Direct-entry to PhD program less than 12  Applicants may be eligible to apply for a CGS Master's Scholarship if he or she has completed less than 12 months of graduate-level study by December 31 of the year of applicationCGS Master's Scholarship  Applicants who have, or will have, completed more than 12 months graduate-level study by December 31 of the year of application, may only apply to the Doctoral Awards funding opportunity  Official letter from department confirming authorized part-time studies and/or leave of absence (if applicable) 10

Doctoral Supporting Documents  Applicants request reference letters from 2 referees ASAP, to be delivered in sealed envelopes to the department  Applicants order transcripts ASAP, to be delivered in sealed envelopes to the department Orders McGill transcripts through Minerva (must have no holds) McGill transcripts are required, even if no grades show Orders non-McGill transcripts from Canadian and US universities Including transfer credits for all academic levels Requests overseas transcripts through McGill department Make sure to mark the following on the transcript: “True copy of document in McGill University file: Department of _________” (include signature)  If applying directly to SSHRC, orders supporting documents early and orders them for pick-up in a sealed envelope 11

Academic Unit “Recommended” Quotas  All departments may recommend a maximum of 10% of their graduate enrollment. 12
