HOW SHOULD I GIVE? ACTS 20:35 - TEXT

Scriptural GIVING is just as important as scriptural baptism or any other act of obedience. In order to determine what is RIGHT one must consider ALL that God has said on the subject... 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17. that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. Romans 15:4 – For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. 1 Corinthians 10:11 – Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come.

When Abraham returned from the battle of the kings he gave a TENTH part to the priest of Salem... Hebrews 7:1-2 – For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2. to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated "king of righteousness," and then also king of Salem, meaning "king of peace,"

Jacob made a vow at Bethel that he would give God a TENTH of all he had... Genesis 28:18-22 – Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. 19. And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously. 20. Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, 21. so that I come back to my father's house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God. 22. And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God's house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You."

The Law of Moses required that the children of Israel give a TITHE... Leviticus 27:30 – And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD's. It is holy to the LORD.

The children of Israel gave a TENTH to the Levites and the Levites gave a TENTH back to the Lord... Numbers 18:21 – "Behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work which they perform, the work of the tabernacle of meeting. Numbers 18:26 – "Speak thus to the Levites, and say to them: 'When you take from the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them as your inheritance, then you shall offer up a heave offering of it to the LORD, a tenth of the tithe.

The Israelites gave the FIRST BORN of their animals and a TENTH of their flocks and herds... Leviticus 27:26 – But the firstborn of the animals, which should be the LORD's firstborn, no man shall dedicate; whether it is an ox or sheep, it is the LORD's. Leviticus 27:33 – And concerning the tithe of the herd or the flock, of whatever passes under the rod, the tenth one shall be holy to the LORD.

The Israelites made PEACE, SIN, and TRESPASS offerings... Leviticus 7:37-38 – This is the law of the burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering, the trespass offering, the consecrations, and the sacrifice of the peace offering, 38. which the LORD commanded Moses on Mount Sinai, on the day when He commanded the children of Israel to offer their offerings to the LORD in the Wilderness of Sinai.

Also, the children of Israel gave FREE WILL OFFERINGS... Numbers 15:1-3 – And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2. "Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: 'When you have come into the land you are to inhabit, which I am giving to you, 3. and you make an offering by fire to the LORD, a burnt offering or a sacrifice, to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering or in your appointed feasts, to make a sweet aroma to the LORD, from the herd or the flock,

In addition, as INDIVIDUALS they were to PROVIDE FOR THE POOR. There was the GLEANINGS...

Leviticus 19:9-10 – 'When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10. And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the LORD your God.

In the SEVENTH YEAR they were to leave the land for the POOR... Exodus 23:11-12 – "Six years you shall sow your land and gather in its produce, 11. but the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave, the beasts of the field may eat. In like manner you shall do with your vineyard and your olive grove.

Deuteronomy 15:1-4 – "At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release of debts. 2. And this is the form of the release: Every creditor who has lent anything to his neighbor shall release it; he shall not require it of his neighbor or his brother, because it is called the LORD's release. 3. Of a foreigner you may require it; but you shall give up your claim to what is owed by your brother, 4. except when there may be no poor among you; for the LORD will greatly bless you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you to possess as an inheritance. Also, in the SEVENTH YEAR they were to release the poor from any DEBT...

In the end of every THIRD YEAR their was again a TITHE given to the Levite, stranger, and the poor... Deuteronomy 14:28-29 – "At the end of every third year you shall bring out the tithe of your produce of that year and store it up within your gates. 29. And the Levite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow who are within your gates, may come and eat and be satisfied, that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.

There were some who did not TRUST God as they ought to, they ROBBED GOD... Malachi 3:8-10 – "Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, 'In what way have we robbed You?‘ In tithes and offerings. 9. You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation. 10. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,“ Says the LORD of hosts, "If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it.

The Lord tells His children to lay up treasure in HEAVEN... Matthew 6:19-21 – "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20. but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

We must put our CONFIDENCE in God and TRUST that He will PROVIDE for His people... Matthew 6:31-34 – Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32. "For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Putting God and spiritual things to the fore front, we must be SUPPORTIVE OF THE PREACHING... 1 Corinthians 9:13-14 – Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat of the things of the temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar? 14. Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel. Philippians 4:15-19 – Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. 16. For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. 17. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. 18. Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. 19. And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Like Christians of the first century we must be ready to send relief to NEEDY BRETHREN... Acts 11:29-30 – Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. 30. This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

COLLECTIONS and CONTRIBUTIONS are to be made for the POOR SAINTS... 2 Corinthians 8:1-9 – Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: 2. that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality. 3. For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing, 4. imploring us with much urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. 5. And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God. 6. So we urged Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also complete this grace in you as well. 7. But as you abound in everything- -in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us--see that you abound in this grace also. 8. I speak not by commandment, but I am testing the sincerity of your love by the diligence of others.

Again, like those of the first century one must give as he has PROSPERED... 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 – Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: 2. On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come. PROSPER – "lit., "in whatever he may be prospered," i. e., in material things; the continuous tense suggests the successive circumstances of varying prosperity as week follows week;" – Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words

There must be the idea of PURPOSEFULNESS when one gives... 2 Corinthians 9:7 – So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. PURPOSE – "to choose for oneself before another thing (prefer), i.e. (by implication) to propose (intend):" - Strong's Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. PURPOSE – "to bring forward, bring forth from one's stores;" – Thayer's Greek Lexicon PURPOSE – "to bring forth or forward," or, in the middle voice, "to take by choice, prefer, purpose," – Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words

There is INDIVIDUAL responsibilities to PROVIDE FOR THE POOR. For our RELATIVES...

1 Timothy 5:4 – But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is good and acceptable before God. 1 Timothy 5:8 – But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 1 Timothy 5:16 – If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows.

There is INDIVIDUAL responsibility to DO GOOD TO ALL MEN... Galatians 6:7-10 – Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. 9. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

There is the INDIVIDUAL responsibility to care for the FATHERLESS and WIDOWS... James 1:26-27 – If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless. 27. Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

Do we TRUST God today? Are we like Israel of old, ROBBING GOD? Listen to the Holy Spirit...

Do we TRUST God today? Are we like Israel of old, ROBBING GOD? Listen to the Holy Spirit... 2 Corinthians 9:6-10 – But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 8. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. 9. As it is written: "He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.“ 10. Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness,

Matthew 5:20 – For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. The religious people of Jesus day were sticklers for the Law of Moses. How ZEALOUS are we for the Law of Christ...
