Presentation transcript:

INNOPAC at Waseda University Library: 3 years experience Masatsugu KANEKO Waseda University Library Hong Kong INNOPAC Users Group Meeting December 2001

Waseda University Founded in 1882 Now has: 9 undergraduate schools 12 graduate schools 15 research and education institutes 44,160 undergraduate and 6,008 graduate students (as of end April, 2001) 5 large campus libraries & 27 small libraries 2 university museums

Library overview (data as of March 31, 2001) 4,540,885 books (2,049,702 in Central Library) Currently subscribing19,823 serial titles 1,224,736 users/year (Central Library) Number of staff: 98 (Central Lib.: 61) *since Dec (part-timers excluded) Special collections include 2 “ National treasures ” (incidentally both Chinese classics: )

History of WINE (Waseda Univ. Scholarly Information Network System) From May 1987 to Nov Japanized and “ Wasedanized ” DOBIS/LIBIS (IBM) Since Nov Japanized INNOPAC (Innovative Interfaces) First user of INNOPAC in Japan

Current Status of WINE Recent numbers (Dec. 4, 2001) 1,603,262 bib records 3,179,204 item records 17,502 check-in records OPAC Access 4,261,490 searches ( - )

Background for system change Cost-cutting down-sizing no customization Needs for a new interface from text-only to GUI WWW compatibility Y2K problem IBM unwilling to support DOBIS/LIBIS

Our considerations Large amount of data and quick response Bib records should be stored in MARC format Different loan rules A “ package product ” rather than customizing

Japanization of INNOPAC Shift-JIS as external code (internally EACC) US MARC format for cataloging Japanese materials with 3 different subfields “ Tochu index ” for keyword search (now replaced by Advanced keyword search) Translating messages into Japanese

Achievement of the new WINE New OPAC interface greatly satisfying users Simplifying works (serials, statistics etc.) More libraries participating to the system Loan rule unification, “ check-in everywhere ” and notification Z39.50 server established (first case in Japan) UNICODE version soon available to public And many others!

Problem we are facing now Waseda University Library is happy with INNOPAC EXCEPT: A large number of “ not processed ” transactions hindering greatly our operations ! * Observable through “ M-I-F-S ” for “ System status ”, showing sometimes thousands !

Cooperation with OCLC Retrospective cataloging project since 1988 (for Japanese materials) Data evaluation by OCLC (very positive result) Agreement for exchange (WINE/OCLC, Dec.1993) 282,980 records loaded to OCLC (Dec. 1995) System change (from D/L to INNOPAC, Nov. 1998) Additional 277,481 records loaded (Nov. 2001) * Loading on a regular basis being planned.

For future development Integrated Multi-Archiving Service (IMAS) In operation since April 2001 Meeting user needs for more e-journals and DB services on the Web In quest of establishing consortia in Japan Enhancement of international cooperation including of course East Asian !

承蒙垂聽,表示感謝 Thank you very much!
