Scheduling ESL

Welcome  Introduction of ESL Director Mike Sain  Explanation of CGA move to Brookhaven  Introduction of New Sheltered Sites

Lab and Sheltered Core Sheltered Core Sheltered Core or Gen Ed Gen Ed (Per ODE)

New ESL Elective Courses Lab Courses are one semester block (not repeatable)  English Lab  Math Lab  Science Lab  Social Studies Lab  Academic Assist for ESL  Core courses will be designated as ESL by:  “L” at the end of a course code = ESL  “LB” at the end of a course code = ESL Block  ESL Lab and Core Courses: Grades 9 & 10 should be blocked

ESL HIGH SCHOOL COURSE SCHEDULING INFORMATION Always look at the state test Reading scores (OAA/OGT/PARCC) in conjunction with the OTELA (ELPA21) scores when determining if a student should be in native-English speaking classes or scheduled with the ESL teacher. If a student has scored Proficient in Reading on the state Reading test, they should initially be scheduled into native-English speaking classes. Pre-functional Newcomer students should be scheduled for a semester of Lab classes. Lab classes should be offered both first and second semesters, since new students enroll all year long. Lab courses cannot be repeated. Beginner Level students and higher may bypass Lab courses. Trial Mainstream students are to be scheduled into regular classes (with native-English speakers) per the Ohio Department of Education. Intermediate Level students who haven’t scored Proficient on the state Reading test should be scheduled into Sheltered Courses. The ESL Teacher can determine students who should be in Gen Ed on an individual basis. When scheduling students into native-English classes, keep in mind that clustering LEP students together will help facilitate Push-in support by the Bilingual Assistants.
