Definition and choice system for maintenance with water the population of small village Submitted by: Pavel Kostyuk Student, WR227 December 6, 2004 (

Water Supply Mission Objectives Supply water to the Masai Village of Naberera, Tanzania, East Africa. –Village of 5000 people with village livestock. –Must supply a maximum of 30 gallons of water per day for each person. Approximately 10,000 gal./day –Pump water to a height of feet from well to tanks. –No existing electrical energy source in the village. –Estimated tree height of 30 feet near the well. –Cleaning methods must be environmentally safe to protect village livestock.

Meeting the Needs A variety of methods were considered to best fit the application needed. –Wind Electrical Concern for unstable wind patterns in area supplying unstable electrical supply. Requires regular maintenance by qualified personnel. Electrical storms could irreparably damage systems. –Wind/Solar/Electrical system Same constraints as Wind Electrical system. Additional maintenance for solar panels.

Meeting the Needs cont.

Wind Mechanical water delivery was system of choice. –Centuries old technology with a proven method and design. –Convert wind into kinetic energy, driving the mechanical piston pump. –Minimal maintenance required. –Rust and corrosion of all-metal frame in arid climate is minimal.

Wind Mechanical Flow Chart Dutch Industries ‘Delta 16’ windmill stands directly over well. Gravity fed main tank overflows into pre-existing 20k gal. tanks Isolation valves and bypass pipes allow for easy system maintenance and isolation in case of water contamination.

System Diagram

Technical Specifications Dutch Industries Delta 16 –39 feet in height with 1:1 pump ratio –56 US gal./min with a 20 foot head. –Concrete base constructed on-site. –PVC interconnecting pipes provide light weight, durable solution for water transfer. ( ndex.shtml)

Future Modifications Possibility to increase output through addition of inline or venture pump. –Use flow and differential pressure to draw water up stand tube and increase flow. Requires use of check valve to prevent losing the prime on the pump.

Schedule

Costs Breakdown Chief financial costs will be labor and price for main tank. Windmill and pump readily available as an assembly through Dutch Industries Ltd. (

Cleaning Procedure for the Two Existing Tanks Summary of steps 1.Drain and ventilate tanks for 72 hrs. 2.Manual scrub of all interior walls and base and visual inspection. 3.Fill tank with chlorine solution. a)Chlorine concentration dependant on level of contamination. 4.Once clean, bolt access covers on – tank ready for use (
