Environmental Studies A Collaborative Case Based Learning Module Winter Storms Abbreviated version of The Case Martha Schoene Beach Management Consultant Faculty, Seton Hall University ©2006

The Learning Modules This collaborative learning module is composed of: A series of interactive PowerPoint presentations. A field journal for your research notes. A Resource Guide that contains a glossary, background information and printed and electronic resources. Hard copies for The Background Information and Glossary contained on the CD can be provide by your Teacher

Guided Questions To help you focus and identify information that will be the most helpful in your research, guided questions will be provided with each of the modules. At times you will be prompted to record the answers in your field journal. Take a look at a New Jersey Beach using one of the Beach Cams to view scenes at night or from the past You can stop the presentations and resume when you are ready.

Working As A Team This module is about collaboration. To be able to work effectively in a group, exchanging ideas, information and perspectives, is a special skill that will be very valuable to you in your college years and beyond. You will be working in two groups: Your case group Your professional team (colleagues working back at the office)

Answers There are no right-wrong answers to the challenge. You will be presented with a problem that desperately needs a solution that can NOT be found in any ONE place. As you discover other perspectives in the case, your recommendations as to possible solutions might change. That is all part of the process. However, you must substantiate your arguments with facts and data

Resources Not all resources will have the information you need, but they might provide the answer for someone else in your group Take advantages of experts – they might have the information you are looking for! = Web Site= movie= print

The Case: The Lost Pizzeria During the winter, there have been a series of storms that have eroded all the sand and damaged an existing seawall, allowing sea water to flood businesses and homes in this small town on the Jersey Shore. The last storm was in January. Please view this amateur video of waves washing over a sea wall and boardwalk, using beach access and roads to flood the town. As a result of action such as this, the pizzeria was damaged.

The Case: The Lost Pizzeria One such business that has been flooded is this popular pizzeria on the Boardwalk. This landmark in town is popular with the local inhabitants and summer tourists and is the sole source of income for the owner and his family.

The Characters in this Case The Pizzeria Owner The Environmentalist The Emergency Management Coordinator The Insurance Adjustor

The Pizza Owner For many years, your family has lived in this shore town. The pizzeria was started by your grandfather. Like all other business owners that have been affected by the storm, you need to decide what you are going to do in regards to your business. This might be a real turning point in your life.

Moving On Let’s move on … Find PowerPoint that corresponds to your role (character) and get together with your professional team to start investigating resources that will help you recommend what should be done to prevent a reoccurrence of the storm damage from your perspective. There is one module for each role.
