Betting on the New Jersey Lottery Lottery sales are made by lottery agents Lottery sales are made from stores A public display shows that lottery bets are available A context for lottery bets is established

Lottery betting in a discrete area A discrete area is set aside for lottery sales The area is part of a store Lottery sales occur near the general checkout area The lottery sales area contains everything necessary to place a bet

Placing a bet A lottery bettor approaches the lottery agent in context A bettor can renew a previous bet, fill out a form, or ask for an “instant game” ticket The agent enters all bets into a machine

Slips Player may replay a previously used slip Player may take new slip from counter, fill it in and present it to Agent A slip can hold between one and five bets

Instant (or “rub off”) Games Provided by Lottery Commission In transparent cases Each case holds one game Price and store-assigned number displayed on case

Conclusion Based on this study we conclude that when a context narrows, the forms of communicative behavior that take place within that context also narrow. The opposite is also likely to be true but that conclusion was not investigated in this study.
