All students were male; women were allowed to sit University exams from 1882 and to take full degrees from 1947.

Cambridge is divided into 31 colleges, which include two graduate-only colleges and three all-female colleges. Students are based at colleges – living in college rooms, often eating in college accommodation Pastoral and financial care comes from the college, and students eventually graduate as part of their college Studies however occur at the department – so students from many different colleges may study together.

Accommodation is provided by the Colleges for all three years of a three-year degree. During the second year you may live in College-owned accommodation outside of the physical boundaries of college. Prices vary from as little as £59 a week to £130; students generally have a lot of choice in the type of room they have.

Dining halls vary greatly in size and appearance – Trinity’s is famous for its size and Tudor style, whilst Murray Edwards College’s Dome (1963) is smaller and famous for its modern design. Nearly all colleges provide breakfast, lunch and dinner for students to eat if they wish. These are usually cafeteria style. Nearly all colleges have a Formal Hall once a week. Most colleges make allowances for vegetarians, some also make allowances for vegans, nut allergy sufferers, and sometimes provide kosher and halal alternatives. Colleges also provide self-catering facilities.

Departments are where the majority of study takes place. Lectures almost invariably take place at a Department. As well as lecturers, you may have labs (for scientists) and seminars (for arts students).

Every College and Department in Cambridge has its own library, so it is highly unlikely that you will ever have to buy your own textbooks. Most books can be found in these libraries using the Newton computerised searching system. The University Library is a copyright library and has over four million books and millions of other publications, including rare books from before 1800.

There are over 450 university student societies, including those for Drama, Sport, Music, Culture, Religion, Careers & Studies Societies are funded by the University and their own members. Colleges also have their own societies, with most having around 40, and the larger colleges having even more! Cambridge also has two levels of student unions – College student unions (sometimes called ‘JCR’s) and the overall Cambridge University Student Union – CUSU.
