Colour and Colour combinations. Rationale: To introduce the children to the colours and possible colour combinations through play and investigation. This will actively involve the children in their own learning. This will inform them about light and colour.

To enable the children to: 1. To identify the different colours. 2. To explore the possible combinations of colours. 3. To investigate the effects of different lights in the classroom. 4. To investigate the splitting of white light using a prism.

 Story to introduce the concepts of colour and light to the children.  Opportunity to explore the tools which were left by the Wizards. (coloured glasses, cellophane pages, transparent pages, mirrors, Kaildeoscope).  Game: Identify basic colours. ◦ Hula hoop/Sheet of paper of different colours. Children first identify the colours. They then find items of this colour in the classroom.

 Children go on a fictional Journey to the Magicians Castle to explore different colours and their effect on the world. (Looking through coloured cellophane)  Predicting colour changes.

 Integration with art to discover the colour combinations possible when mixing colours.  Children explore by mixing different colours. Only primary colours on the table, red, blue, yellow.

 Rainbow world.  Looking at colours in our world. White light/ sunlight. What colour is sunlight?  Using a prism.

 Story: the Three Wizards.  Colour Equipment: Cellophane (red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple)  Light bulbs: green, red, blue.  Coloured Glasses  Kaliedoscope  Mirrors  Transparent ‘Paper’.  Prisms  Paint: Primary Colours  A3 Paper

 Whole Class for storytelling.  Collaborative Groups of 3/4 for light activities and painting. Working together to discover and identify colours.  One set of materials per group to encourage teamwork.

For Example:  Art: Colour Mixing Activities.  English: Writing stories, Story: The Rainbow Fish
