Policy History 1970s Provost requires cycles of academic program review & evaluation on campuses 1998 & 2004 Board of Trustees (BOT) adds SUNY requirements for assessment of student learning and campus environment in undergraduate General Education (e.g., GEAR, SCBA, NSSE, CCSSE) 2008 External audit finds virtually 100% campus compliance & BOT requests streamlined assessment policy 2009 Provost reduces campus reporting & Advisory Group recommends other streamlining 2010 BOT streamlines SUNY assessment requirements by aligning them with rigorous assessment standards in regional and programmatic accreditation

5 Streamlined Assessment Policy Reaffirms SUNY’s longstanding commitment to assessment to enhance excellence Builds on success of earlier policies Aligns requirements of New York State, SUNY, Middle States & programmatic accreditation Expects campuses to meet or exceed Middle States standards by assessing: Institutional Effectiveness Academic Programs – student learning outcomes & external review General Education – SUNY-GER student learning outcomes

6 Streamlined Assessment Policy (con’t) Asks campuses to send e-copy of all accreditation determinations to SUNY Provost within 30 days of receipt Gives SUNY Provost new role to: --review official determinations of accreditation bodies & assisting campuses as needed --work with leadership, faculty and others to implement the policy --provide resources to ensure consultation and assistance, including the formation of an assessment advisory group
