What is a Peer-review Source Peer review is what characterizes academic research. If a publication is peer reviewed it means it has been read, checked and authenticated (reviewed) by independent, third party academics (peers). Peer review has been the quality- control system of academic publishing for hundreds of years. Peer-reviewed journals are also called scholarly journals. Many of the library databases contain such journals. Some databases include only peer-reviewed titles while others allow the user to restrict a search to peer-reviewed or scholarly only.
