Critical path: Issue: target shaft: – Two approaches to shaft manufacture planned: ‘One piece’: weld two pieces together, then grind to size ‘Two piece’: grind to size, then weld – One-piece shaft has failed: Grinding company removed too much material and compromised weld: – One shaft ‘fell apart’ at grinders; – Others have too little material for weld to be considered sound – Therefore now moving on to weld preparation for two-piece shafts
Impact on schedule: Shaft manufacture now ~3 weeks behind schedule Can recover, but need to take care fixing two pieces of shaft together: – Electron-beam weld ‘baseline’: – Alternatives are being considered: Pin, pin and weld, … – If Jason concludes that an alternative fixing scheme should be adopted will present paper to TB for consideration There is risk here! – Well aware of need to install target in August shutdown Also well aware of continuing requirement to maintain high standards of quality control and tracking of manufacture
