Newfoundland Joins Confederation By Jen D.,Owen M.and Justin D.

Newfoundland Became a province on March 31 st, 1949 Joseph R. Smallwood (the leader that lead them into confederation) Newfoundland was the last province to join confederation in 1949.

“Joey” Smallwood (Joseph) Brought Newfoundland into Canada in 1949 From 1949 till the day he died, "Joey" was affectionately known as the only living father of Confederation

Facts When Newfoundland joined Canada it was Britain's oldest colony but then became Canada's newest province. Newfoundland entered Canadian Confederation in 1949 as the tenth Province, 450 years after being "discovered" by John Cabot. Silver Dollar

Negative Quotes A few quotes taken from THE SHIPPING NEWS that reflect Confederation as having a negative impact on Newfoundland's economy “Well, I was a sucker, I believed him. I went along with everything the first ten years or so. Sure, I wanted them things, too, the electricity and roads, telephone, radio. Sure I wanted health care, mail service, good education for me kids. Some of it come in. But not the jobs." (p 65) “ And the fishing's went down, down, down, forty years sliding away into nothing, the goddamn Canada government giving fishing rights to every country on the face of the earth, but regulating us out of business. The damn foreign trawlers. That's where all the fish is went." (p 65)

 The current flag of Newfoundland Labrador was introduced in 1980 designed by a local artist  The former flag was the union flag and was adopted in 1931  Red = Newfoundland Labrador

Some Positive Aspects of Confederation Helped to complete the Confederation dream of a country stretching from sea to sea to sea. Brought a new aspect to the culture of Canada, involving food, music, accent etc.
