UCLA Campus Wireless Pilot Initiative Update for ITPB 10/25/01

Discussion Topics  Issues Discussed & Recommendations  Priority Next Steps

Key Issues Discussed & Recommendations  Encryption – Provisioning with a single vendor for pilot? Recommendation: For the pilot, use VPN. As deployment continues to expand alternative methodologies will be considered as appropriate.

Key Issues Discussed & Recommendations  Authenticate access or not? Recommendation: For the pilot, restrict access to pilot participants As deployment continues to expand, alternative authentication models will be considered.

Other Issues Discussed & Recommendations  How do you deal with radio spectrum interference issues? Recommendations: Support a Centrally Managed Wireless network for “Common” areas Beyond common areas, deployment of wireless networks should match model for physical networks Establish and maintain a registry of wireless networks on campus. Continued...

Other Issues Discussed & Recommendations (continued) CTS serve as arbitrator for interference issues between wireless networks. Proposed priority use of spectrum: departmental networks as first priority, specific teaching or academic research purposes, then general campus wireless networks

Key Issues Discussed & Recommendations  Lack of roaming continuity Not resolvable in the near term  Support Issues (e.g. ease of use for the end-user and who provides support) For the pilot, customer support is being finalized Future campus wide deployment will require centrally triaged help desk services.

Priority Next Steps  End-User Support planning underway – Support objectives include: Learning how to support wireless use (e.g. walk-in, phone, /web) Explore most efficient way of providing support  Developing advertising options to acquire pilot participation  Developing assessment methodology (e.g. Exit Survey, Support Survey)
