Urban Climate Change Brazil, August 2010 BY SADIQUE BILAL SPORTS AND YOUTH OFFICER Kilimanjaro Initiative Copyright © 2010 CCAA Project

About us Kilimanjaro Initiative was founded in 2005 by Tim Challen, after he was victim of gun crime in Nairobi, Kenya. He wanted to understand what it was that could push young people to pull a trigger.

Crime in Nairobi Leading issues: Poverty Unemployment Social Exclusion Lack of ‘Basic’ Services Lack of Education Unsafe Urban Spaces

Using sport as a tool to: Raise global awareness on urban safety issues Support youth as agents of constructive change Encourage social responsibility Create a synergy of development Raise funds for youth-based community projects Objectives

Climbing Kilimanjaro Every year, KI brings youth and urban stakeholders together - to raise awareness on issues that may lead at- risk youth into criminal activities.

Climbing Kilimanjaro Climb 2010 brought attention to affects of climate change on urban safety. UNEP Representative reads letter of support from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Projects & Activities Kibera Slum, Nairobi– Young persons lack clean and safe spaces where to play. Even though certain infrastructures exist, garbage is everywhere and causes serious health hazards.

Working with the community, KI has helped upgrade a sport field in Kibera. We have created an urban area where youth can positively use their energy and where the community can meet without fear of crime. Projects & Activities

Flooding was a problem on the field. Local criminals were hired to carry out manual work. No tools went missing and they have now formed a youth group that sells vegetables for revenue. Local problems require local solutions.

Projects & Activities KI organizes sports events and concerts on the field. Raising awareness through media youth understand and want to be a part of is primordial.

Sport Field Model KI - Grants - Donors - Awards - Partners - Members - Youth - Community - Academia - Authorities - UN Sport Field Committee Advice/SupportSupport/Sponsorship Micro-FinanceActivities

The Future Work on models that encourage youth to have self-belief and provide formal opportunites Development of sport fields and community centres Set up of micro-finance tool for youth groups Create new links and synergies Make sure youths are driving the process

The Future CLIMB 2011 Starts 28 February Theme: Towards a ‘Green’ Economy & Greater Urban Safety
