The author is in agreement with what we’ve learned in class. “ User have to be the center of attention. It is important to investigate who the users are, what they really need, how they use the data, what their competence levels are, how they work with statistical data and, what they are doing with statistical data.” Distinguishing between users and visitors is key to targeting the correct user base. Consideration to the types of users that visit statistical websites is important. They can be regular users- need the information for work (journalist), professional users, researchers, interested citizens, private and public institutions, government and the scientific community. Metadata should be provided to prevent confusion and incorrect interpretation of the data being presented. Metadata suggestions included variable definitions, description of surveys, and data quality reporting. Serious consideration must be given to response time and navigation. As we’ve learned in class, users don’t want to wait. “This is a very sensitive issue.” Hyperlinks should be distinguished by underlining them and always include one for the homepage, to keep the user from getting lost. Website functions should included the ability to download the both data and documentation. Static Web pages are good for static or fixed tables, graphics, and statistical maps. Human capital issues related to availability of technical expertise to develop and maintain the website must be considered. Conclusion – This article is closely related to my project and the content is consistent with class lectures. Jacob Nielsen’s article, “Designing Web Usability” was referenced.

Software Process I am proposing to use the Scrum software development lifecycle. It’s appropriate for this project because the development cycle is about 30 days. Scrum will allow the team to integrate any client changes within a short period of time. The project is small in scope. The dedicated project team is small also.
