Mediation in Multistakeholder processes Conflict management styles Escalation and de-escalation of conflicts Mediation of conflicts

MSP’s are always conflictive processes

Multi stakeholder processes

Conflicts are: The result of different: Perceptions Assumptions Interests Values

Threat or opportunity? Wei-ji the Chinese character for crisis, encompasses two powerful symbols: danger and opportunity

Increase Opportunities, Decrease Threats * The key is to view conflict as an opportunity to implement change in the way people interact and improve their problem solving skills * Successful conflict resolution can result in innovations and strengthened relationships for your multi-stakeholder process

Role of project managers Project managers do not always have to provide the solution to the conflict, but they should be skilled in how to facilitate, negotiate, or communicate conflict resolutions.

A reflection on your experiences Before considering models and strategies to resolve conflict, it is important to reflect on your own personal experiences with conflict. Reflecting on your personal conflict style can contribute to increase your skills in managing different conflict situations.

Conflict styles (Thomas Kilmann Thomas Gilmore has defined 5 different conflict styles that are all successful strategies. The key is to be skilled in each of these styles and to know when to apply each strategy

The Thomas Killman Conflict Mode Instrument To assess your own preferences for a style we will apply the conflict mode instrument, developed by Killman
