Some Suggested Guidelines for Publishing in “A” Journals Rick Iverson 1.Contribution of your work: Originality of ideas  Demonstrate how have you extended the field- more than replication  Identification of gap in the literature- AoM meetings, AMJ, JAP, etc  Theoretical, empirical, and practical importance  Displays your research program- expertise  Timeliness of your contribution

2. Write to be published (e.g., Martin Kilduff)  Write with discipline- must be able to convey message  Get feedback from multiple sources: colleagues, conferences, etc  Convert conference presentation to journal submission  Refinement becomes part of the process  Don’t be too impulsive to submit

3. Targeting of journal  Always review Editor and Editorial Board- you receive better reviews from experts  Appropriateness- write for that journal- some journals weigh theoretical and empirical contribution equally, others emphasize one over the other  Special Issues of journals  Don’t discount Research Notes over Full Articles  Adhere to style, length, etc requirements of journal  Know the top journals in your field

4. Revision process: Responses to Editor and Reviewers  Remember acceptance rates of top journals are extremely low  Put major revision effort into paper  Always address major and minor comments  Letter to Editor is critical  Get feedback from colleagues before resubmission  Adhere to timeframe for revisions

5. Perseverance  Never give up- is a process  If rejected, still address concerns  Don’t automatically submit to lower tier journals  Luck plays a role- Editor (revise and resubmit) and Reviewers (empathetic)
