Music in the Antebellum Period

Types of Songs Many people during this time expressed their love for America through patriotic songs. When someone is patriotic it means that he or she loves his or her country.

Patriotic Songs You May Have Heard The Star Spangled Banner Yankee Doodle Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah! Hail to the Chief! My Country 'tis of Thee

Why did they listen to and sing to this music? Composers and song writers were trying to express how they felt about wars and battles Some of the songs were used to tell stories about what happened in battles Some songs were used for celebration Mostly, the songs were written to remind people of the soldiers that were fighting for our country and our freedom

Instruments of the Period Snare drumsCymbals

Drums Drums were a major part of military bands at this time There was usually a bass drum and a snare drum The snare drums were made out of an animals head and rawhide and had a wooden shell

Cymbals Cymbals were much smaller than they are today Most of the cymbals had wooden or leather handles so that they were easy to hold

Let’s think! How is music now different from what music was like then? Do we have more instruments to play music compared to what they had back then? What do singers sing about in their songs now compared to what they used to sing about then? What does our music have in common with music in the past?

Other types of Music We have talked mostly about patriotic music Research on your own or with a partner to find other types of music from the period Who wrote the songs? What were the songs about? Did the songs send special messages or tell stories? What types of instruments were used to play the music in the songs?
