Models Wanted Facilitating Quality Qualitative Research Across the University Joanne K. Singleton Sophie R. Kaufman John P. Dory

The International Institute for Qualitative Methodology Dr. Janice Morse University of Alberta, Edmonton  February 1998 Provide leadership to address issues in qualitative methods Promote excellence in qualitative research through education and research Provide forum for international qualitative experts to collaborate Conduct qualitative research

IIQM – North American Site Affiliated International Sites  Australia  Brazil  South Korea  Israel  Mexico  Netherlands  South Africa

IIQM Cooperating Sites Multidisciplinary group of qualitative researchers within an institution  Uses IIQM’s broad goals to be what it wants to be  Web site linked to closest international site Then links to other international sites Provides info about qualitative activities, group meetings, courses, workshops, faculty expertise, ongoing research and publications

IIQM Cooperating Site Advantages Tremendous  Mentors  Consultants  Courses/ Workshops/ Instruction  SUPPORT

Pace’s IIQM Cooperating Site 1 st US Cooperating Site in 2000 What have we done? Where are we heading?

Qualitative Research Methods Lubin School Doctoral Program John P. Dory Director

Lubin Doctoral Program Founded 1972 Practitioner orientation Little formal research training Early dissertations  Often qualitative  Frequently exploratory (and interdisciplinary)  Usually unstructured (and long)  Little formal hypothesis testing

Changes Over 30 Years More research trained faculty Greater research orientation  Three courses in methodology  Research papers in many seminars Dissertations  Often quantitative  Frequently discipline-bounded  Highly structured (and brief)  Usually formal hypothesis testing

Program Trends Better building on prior research Greater contributions to literature More quantitatively sophisticated Less direct observation Less process orientation Less understanding of context Potentially less practitioner relevance

Explorations in Business Research New course began with new hybrid curriculum  First program semester  First of three required research seminars Objectives  Identify broad range of research methods  Develop capability to evaluate  [Review elementary statistics]

Qualitative Research Component Historical approach  2002 Stephen Blank  2003Joanne Singleton and Evert Gummesson  2004Joanne Singleton Student reaction  Genuine interest  Desires to “incorporate”  Anxiety about barriers

Barriers to Qualitative Research Bias in business disciplines  No Lubin faculty with expertise or experience in qualitative methods  Limited publishing opportunity for qualitative research in business Extra burden for students  Time  Effort

Where to go from here? Sophie R. Kaufman

What’s in it for you? Pace University Strategic Plan: Core Objective One: Strengthen Pace’s Academic Excellence and Reputation 3 – Implement a Strategy to become a Tier II national comprehensive University by 2008 i - Greater emphasis on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary courses is needed

The answer is… One way to reach these goals is to engage our faculty and students (graduate and undergraduate) in quality interdisciplinary research. Based on our successful experience with Lubin DPS students, we would like to expand the services of the IIQM-CS University-wide.

How can you get assistance? The IIQM-CS is part of the Center for Nursing Research, Clinical Practice, and International Affairs (CNRCPIA) that will coordinate IIQM- CS interventions.

The Proposed Process Request consultation from CNRCPIA CNRCPIA schedules consultation with Dr. Singleton Determine services needed: class participation, seminar, student mentoring, referrals to IIQM resources… Intervention of IIQM-CS Evaluation

Models Wanted! What are you already doing to support qualitative research in your school? Are these initiatives for graduate students only? Undergraduate students? How can the IIQM-CS help you engage your students in qualitative research? Let’s discuss your specific needs…
