Open Field Testing of Rodents: Spring 2011

Anxiety – Gross Motor Behavior - Open Field Test Place animal in a corner square for a designated amount of time then observe the number of squares transversed, rearing, defecation etc.  Anxiolytics serve to increase exploratory behavior 48 cm Observe species-common (behavior: rearing sniffing, grooming) Observe thigmotaxic behavior (stay at walls)

5 min test DVs – What type of data do we have???? Nominal, Scale, Ratio???  Latency (in sec)  Squares Transversed (#)  Rearing (#)  Asst. Rearing (#)  Grooming (#)  Fecal Boli (#)  Urination (#)  Thigmotaxic behavior (yes or no)

IVs ??? Environment Standard, Enriched Exposure to handling Handled, not Handled

In your Method you need: Subjects??? Who are they? (age, gender) Where did you get them? (vendor) How are they housed? What is their L/D cycle? Protocol Approval? Apparatus??? What equipment will you be using???? (Model#, City etc…) Open Field Specifics Any other equipment Procedure??? Take notes!!!!

What are your hypotheses? Can have more than one… Rats are nocturnal.... Past Research….
