Policy-based Fault Management for Integrating IP over Optical Networks Cláudio Carvalho Edmundo Madeira Institute of Computing (IC) Unicamp – Brazil São Paulo, November 2005

Motivation Optical fiber has a huge bandwidth; Fault management is necessary in order to reduce the impact of fiber cut; Grooming is necessary in order to aggregate low- order traffic within a lightpath; We propose policies to deal with grooming and traffic installation, trying to reduce the impact of a single failure. An architecture is also proposed.

Proposed Solution Architecture for policy-based admission of packet flows within the optical domain. For sake of space we will not show the policies; We are considering single-hop lightpaths and four types of protection (1+1,1:1,1:N).

Results We developed three groups of policies and validated these policies creating traffic loads from 80% to 240% of the network bandwidth; The results showed that the most elaborated policy group admitted around of 15% more than the simplest group and also blocked less high priority traffic from 80% to 160% of traffic load; With the policies, it was possible to prioritize high priority traffic and traffic with one-to-one protection.

Conclusion The architecture and policies were implemented in Java language; The results showed that the policies are suitable for optimizing the use of network resources and reducing the impact of failures (fiber). With the policies are also possible to prioritize the admission of a specific kind of traffic; Future works include the application of the autonomic concepts in a fault management scenario.
