Team Zephyr Launch Readiness Review Joseph Sheehey, Huy Le, Andrew Zizzi, Alex Morrow, Sam Evans, Logan Wright November 11, 2008

Mission Overview Ascend to approximately 31,000 meters. Take ambient light readings during the entire flight –Using LED Photometer strings –Recorded on HOBOs Take photographs for the entire duration of the flight at 15 second intervals.

Design Overview 15cm Cube Two rows of 5 LEDs on each side –1 LED of each wavelength on each side and top –5cm Baffling tube on each LED Camera –Filter allows clear view while minimizing heat loss

Cold Test 1

Cold Test 2

Cold Test Light Intensity Violet

Structural Test Results Drop Test – Passed –8 story drop with mass simulators –BalloonSat received minimal damage Whip Test – Passed –String Attachment Tube was undamaged –Internal components were unmoved Stair Test – Passed –Survived 20 Stair drop/kick with dented corners and edges.

Flight Results (Predicted) Visible light spectrum will remain the same intensity or decreased with increased altitude. IR radiation will increase with increasing altitude. –Water vapor in atmosphere filters out Infrared radiation from reaching the ground. UV radiation will increase with increasing altitude. –The ozone and atmosphere almost completely filter out UV radiation from reaching the ground. –UV radiation will increase drastically above the Ozone layer at approximately 24 km.

Biggest Worries Cold –First Cold Test Failed –Second Cold Test Passed (4 hours) but did not get as cold –Camera failing because of cold

Requirement Complies ? Design Specifications to Comply Design shall have one additional experiment that collects science data. Yes Design includes an LED Photometer based science mission to collect data on the variation in select wavelengths of radiation with altitude. After flight, BalloonSat shall be turned in working and ready to fly again. Yes BalloonSat design includes the ability to replace consumables (i.e.. Batteries, SD memory) BalloonSat is constructed out of resilient materials to minimize the wear caused by Flight. Flight string interface tube shall be a non-metal tube through the center of the BalloonSat and shall be secured to the box so it will not pull through the BalloonSat or interfere with the flight string. See flight string attachment diagram at the end of this document. Yes BalloonSat design incorporates a plastic tube for the flight string through the center of the Cube. Tube is affixed in compliance with specifications laid out in the RFP diagram Internal temperature of the BalloonSat shall remain above 0°C during the flight. Yes Insulation and Heater are included to maintain internal temperature. Cold Testing has verified that a Heater with well charged batteries can maintain an internal temperature above 0°C Total weight shall not exceed 1,000 grams.YesFinal mass is ~870 grams Each team shall acquire (not necessarily measure) ascent and descent rates of the flight string. Yes BalloonSat with acquire approximate ascent rates by matching air temperature curves with known values. Our team will also acquire accurate altitude values from the GPS unit on the flight string Design shall allow for a HOBO H (provided) 68x48x19 mm and 29 grams Yes Temperature recording HOBO is fit into the volume need for all Data loggers. Design shall allow for external temperature cable (provided) Yes External temperature cable fits into the BalloonSat and is affixed with the probe 2.54cm outside of the Cube. Design shall allow for an Canon A570IS Digital Camera 45x75x90mm and 220 grams Yes Camera volume and mass are incorporated into BalloonSat Plan BalloonSat shall be made of foam core.YesBalloonSat is constructed of FoamCore Parts list and budget shall include spare parts.Yes Budget includes the purchase of 5-10 spare LEDs All BalloonSats shall have contact information written on the outside along with a US Flag. Yes Contact information and a US Flag are affixed to the exterior of the BalloonSat. Units shall be in metric.YesAll measurements were made in metric units

Requirement Design Complies?Design Specifications to Comply Launch is in November 15, Time and location: 7:30 AM in Windsor, CO. Launch schedule will be given later. Everyone is expected to show up for launch. Only one team member is required to participate on the recovery. Launch and recovery should be completed by 3:00 PMYes Entire team will attend Launch, Andrew Zizzi and Logan Wright will participate in recovery. No one shall get hurt.YesBalloonSat Zephyr contains no hazardous or sharp materials All hardware is the property of the Gateway to Space program and must be returned at end of the semester.YesHardware shall be returned at the end of the semester All parts shall be ordered and paid by Chris Koehler’s CU Mastercard by appointment to minimize reimbursement paperwork. All teams shall keep detailed budgets on every purchase and receipts shall be turned in within 48 hours of purchase with team name written on the receipt.YesParts were ordered with Chris Koehler's CU credit card All purchases made by team individuals shall have receipts and must be submitted within 60 days of purchase or reimbursement will be subject to income taxes.YesReceipts shall be turned in within 60 days of purchase Have fun and be creative.YesFun is being had by all! Absolutely nothing alive will be permitted as payloads, with the exception of yellow jackets, mosquitoes, fire ants, earwigs, roaches, or anything you would squish if you found it in your bed.YesNo live animals are included in payload. Completion of final report (extra credit if team video is included)YesFinal report will be completed.
