Form Follows Emotion Postmodern Design

Postmodernism Postmodernism aims to embrace diversity and contradiction, thus rejects the distinction between low and high art forms. Postmodern style is often characterized by eclecticism ( 折中主义 ), digression ( 离 题 ), collage ( 拼贴 ), pastiche ( 混合曲 ), irony ( 反讽 ), the return of ornament ( 装饰 ) and historical reference ( 历史 参照 ), and the appropriation of popular media. Post- modernism rejects rigid genre boundaries and promotes parody ( 蠢事 ), irony, and playfulness ( 嬉闹 ), commonly referred to as jouissance by postmodern theorists. As postmodern icon David Byrne, and his band Talking Heads said: "Stop making sense."

Postmodernism (1960s – 90s) Against ‘slick, black humourless design of the 70s’ As an opposition to the pure functionalism of the International Style

Postmodernism (1960s – 90s) Characterized by the use of vivid or pastel colors Suggest a sense of humor and playfulness Revived value for personality, individualism, history and human

Constructionism “Design is no longer seen as a unity but as a sum of parts. We concentrate more on the elements that determine an object than on the object itself....” - Ettore Sottsass
