2005 Logistics Summit Using GIS Technologies for Oversize/Overweight Permitting Joel Bump, Senior GIS Software Developer

2005 Logistics Summit Using GIS Technologies for Oversize/Overweight Permitting What is GIS? GIS Technologies –Spatial Datasets –Geocoding –Routing Using the Technologies for Permitting

2005 Logistics Summit What is GIS? GIS is a technology that manages, analyzes, and disseminates geographic knowledge. GIS lets you model scenarios to test various hypotheses and see outcomes visually GIS is, therefore, about modeling and mapping the world for better decision making.

2005 Logistics Summit GIS Technologies Spatial Datasets –Road Network Routes, ramps, rail, bridges… –Permanent restrictions Low Clearance, weight, lane width, turning radius… –Temporary restrictions Construction, maintenance, environmental, major accidents…

2005 Logistics Summit GIS Technologies Geocoding –Use address ranges, road names and zip code data on the road network to locate addresses. –Find the begin and end point for the route quicker and more accurately.

2005 Logistics Summit GIS Technologies Routing –Programmatically find the most efficient route between locations on the road network. –Use restriction data associated with the road segments in comparison to the vehicle specs to determine the most acceptable route.

2005 Logistics Summit Using the Technologies for Permitting Online process –Accounts setup –Online permit submittal –Envelope Routes Predefined routes Approval based on envelope selection, vehicle setup, date of travel and restrictions posted for the travel time. –Manual Review Geocoded locations New GIS based Bridge and Restriction Maps. –Electronic payment –Online permit printing

2005 Logistics Summit Future Processes –Automatic Route Generation and alternatives. User selects begin and end points and date for travel. System analyzes all possible routes based on –Vehicle configuration –Temporary restrictions on routes during travel time –Permanent route restrictions Results are one or many of the following –Primary route (shortest or quickest route) –Alternative routes –Alternative dates if no successful route is found within the given travel time and the cause for no routes to be found was a temporary restriction. –Manual review Using the Technologies for Permitting

2005 Logistics Summit Restriction Mapping other uses –Develop Adobe PDF maps and online dynamic maps to show current restrictions to general public –Restriction data is used in public 511 system for traffic conditions reported via phone. –Restriction database allows for a single repository of all restriction, construction, maintenance, environmental and major accidents to be disseminated to parties that need to be informed via pager, , list-serv and internet applications. –Data entry of restrictions can occur at the most appropriate levels within state government.
