Dan Claes Susan Pfiffner Brian Jones HUSEP Collaboration Meeting Thursday, September 22, 2005

Task EO-1 Develop an E&O component that is truly integrated with the operations and research programs of the multi-disciplinary Henderson DUSEL. We will devise new initiatives developed in consultation with the project scientists, K-12 teachers, and members of the local communities. There will be an emphasis on the local schools, but instructional materials will be distributed nationally. Task EO-2 Organize broader impacts component of each of the four proposed Henderson DUSEL workshops, drawing K-12 and undergraduate educators and students at each of the different venues in an effort to develop genuine and effective connections with the science. Task EO-4 Develop plans to host a joint AAPT-Colorado/Wyoming and CAST (Colorado Association of Science Teachers, the Colorado section of the NSTA) meeting and organize sessions within their regular annual meetings to build interest and assess needs to be certain we develop a program appropriate for our intended audience. Task EO-3 In addition to invitations to workshop sessions, we propose going directly to Hispanic and Native American community leaders and request audiences at regularly scheduled Denver area special events, celebrations, and regional powwows all in an effort to assess regional needs and expectations.

In order to attract students and teachers ( especially without the budget for release-time salary or stipends ) schedule session late in the day, e.g. 4:00-8:00pm Promoting the E&O sessions at each venue: “Make & Take” activity hands-on exercises to include supplies/instructions for assembling a useful piece of equipment for the classroom (budgeted $60/participant) simple dinner (we budgeted $15/participant) include and Since each major workshop focuses on a theme (Geology, Biology. etc) select relevant Make & Take activities! Dan, Brian (Physics), Susan (Biology) Andrew Warnock (Geology) CSU’s Center for Science, Math and Technology Education

Sessions will generally follow 40 minute presentation (on DUSEL or some specific science at DUSEL) Make & Take building activity Dinner Brainstorming session: Where we assess local needs and try to learn exactly what resources would prove most useful. What would they expect from the outreach program of a nearby national lab (and what would they actually use ). We’d be looking for ideas to incorporate into the EO sections of the full proposal.

The 1 st workshop is scheduled Friday, October 21 A Thursday session scheduled the evening before would attract more teachers than a Friday evening session! We will need a classroom blocked out for the afternoon & evening suitable for around 25+/-?? participants and the table top exercise planned help in making arrangements for the catered dinner for teachers

Promotion will be through local chapters of AAPT and NSTA. We have mailing lists of teachers sorted by zip code. Brian already has contacts in all many area schools. Teachers he knows in the Boulder area will help spread the word. Steve Iona (DAPT) can help with Denver-area schools Jean Carpenter (CAST) may also be able to spread the word. Brian’s Little Shop of Physics will be in Boulder on October 18 and can whip up some interest immediately before.

The Joint AAPT-Colorado/Wyoming & CAST annual Fall meeting (November 17-18) has a call to presenters for abstracts now. Brian actually has a column in the CAST Quarterly Newsletter where he can promote HUSEP-related activities! Claes will make a presentation to a DAPT meeting this fall.

Task EO-3 In addition to invitations to workshop sessions, we propose going directly to Hispanic and Native American community leaders to request audiences at regularly scheduled Denver area special events, celebrations, and regional powwows in an effort to assess regional needs & expectations. We are currently planning to make a presentation at an AISES (American Indian Science and Engineering Society) group and find a comparable Hispanic venue. Brian annually plans Little Shop of Physics October activities with the Native American Student Services campus Organization and El Centro (Hispanic Student Center).
