Winter Erosion Processes and Modeling Meeting May 1-3, 2007 USDA-Agricultural Research Service National Soil Erosion Research Laboratory West Lafayette, Indiana, USA

Welcome to the Meeting! Dennis Flanagan Agricultural Engineer

Reasons for this Meeting Winter hydrology and soil erosion processes are important over a large area of the world.Winter hydrology and soil erosion processes are important over a large area of the world. Current erosion prediction technology models often poorly account for these processes.Current erosion prediction technology models often poorly account for these processes. Improved estimation of soil freezing/thawing, snow accumulation and melting, and their effects on soil erodibility are needed to help us make better estimates of soil loss by water or by wind.Improved estimation of soil freezing/thawing, snow accumulation and melting, and their effects on soil erodibility are needed to help us make better estimates of soil loss by water or by wind. New common wind and water erosion model needs to have the best possible predictions of these winter processes.New common wind and water erosion model needs to have the best possible predictions of these winter processes.

Meeting Objectives Learn about current state of science related to winter hydrology and erosion processes. Learn about current modeling techniques and their shortcomings. Discuss with other participants about where areas of needed research and model development are. Make plans for cooperative research and modeling efforts between the several locations represented here.
