Käthe Kollwitz “ Zeichnung ist die einzige Sache, die mein Leben bildet” “Drawing is the only thing that makes my life bearable.”

*Family Life* Born on July 8, 1867 in Königsberg, Russia Parents were Käte and Carl Schmids She didn’t have any siblings, which was better for her, she got to experience art school, because her parents could afford it

Käthe attended the Berlin School of Art at the age of 14, in her later years she studied art in Munich

Marriage Married Karl Kollwitz in 1891 and moved to Berlin… Karl was a doctor for poverty- stricken people in Germany After marrying, they moved into the poor section of Berlin, and her art started showing what she was feeling, and what she thought that the people were around her feeling

Children The Kollwitz’s had two sons, Hans and Peter

WAR Both of her children went to war, and she being liberal, was completely against it, and Peter, her eldest son died during World War I

HITLER While Hitler was in rule, her art was labeled as “Degenerate” ( “Entartete Kunst” )and her works were put into hiding along with other artists like Max Beckmann. Käthe’s art was looked down on and she was in danger, because once she went up against Hitler while he was in rule, there was no going back, and you always had to watch yourself.

While Käthe was alive, she was a great inspiration to women throughout Germany, her works were so amazing and when people saw them, they wanted her to draw, and just observe.

Death Käthe Kollwitz died on April 22, 1945 of natural causes in Moritzburg, Germany. She lived a great and full life, according to her, and I think that she was an amazing artist.
