Personal Qualities Needed for Persistence and Achievement n Motivation –Motivation is the process of generating and directing one’s time and energy toward one’s goals. n Confidence –Confidence is the belief that you have the ability to achieve despite frustrations and discouragements. n A Sense of Direction and Goals –Having a sense of direction provides a target for one’s investment of time and energy. n Strategies for Achieving –Strategies are the methods one uses to complete the tasks and demands needed to achieve one’s goals.

Work on Your Strengths, Not Your Weaknesses n Most learning theories are “deficit-based.” That is, “fixing your weaknesses.” n Current research on high achievers found that they: –Build their lives around their strengths. –They invent ways to use their strengths to make themselves effective. –They just try to manage their weaknesses.

Talents versus Strengths n A talent is a specific quality that enables a person to do certain things very well, and ultimately make you more effective. n A strength is a talent that has been developed to a point that consistently provides near-perfect performance. n Is it possible to have a talent that is not a strength? –Talents are meaningless until they are honed into a strength. n Is it possible to have a strength that is not a talent? –Yes, but it can kill you in the process. Most people try to do this.

Types of Talents and Strengths n Physical gifts or characteristics n Behavior patterns n Thinking patterns n Beliefs and attitudes n Motivations and striving n Relating to others n Impacting others
