Bell Ringer HOW ARE THESE PICTURES SIMILAR? DO YOU THINK THAT THE FIRST AUTHOR HAS COPIED THE SECOND PERSON’S IMAGE? This image is from The New York Times

IS THIS FAIR?

PLAGIARISM WHAT WORDS COME TO MIND IF I SAY THAT THE FIRST PICTURE HAS PLAGIARIZED THE SECOND?

TO PLAGIARIZE: “TO USE AND PASS OFF AS ONE’S OWN THE IDEAS OR WRITINGS OF ANOTHER.” AMERICAN HERITAGE COLLEGE DICTIONARY

Objectives SWBAT: Know what plagiarism is. Know how to avoid plagiarism. Be knowledgeable about how to write without plagiarizing.

Question: Have you ever copied another person’s story or idea for a story and said that it was yours? That’s plagiarism

To avoid plagiarizing another person’s ideas or words when you are writing, make sure you: 1.Cite the source (the person, book, or internet site) that you got the information from. (MLA or APA) 2.Use your own words when writing. NOTE: You don’t need to cite facts such as, “JFK WAS ELECTED AS PRESIDENT IN 1960.”

Documentation: APA – American Psychological Association MLA – Modern Language Association

MLA: In text citation: (Defoe 105) Works Cited Defoe, Daniel. Robinson Crusoe. 2 nd ed. New York: Scribners, Dubus, Andre. House of Sand and Fog. United States: Vintage Books, 1999.

Closure: Take the paragraph on the following page and summarize it in your own words, giving credit where it’s due.

Summarize the following: “In a speech he made in Boston in 1930, Rogers told of the epitaph he wanted placed on his grave. ‘When I die,’ he said, ‘my epitaph, or whatever you call those signs on gravestones, is going to read: ‘I joked about every prominent man of my time, but I never met a man I didn’t like.’” -Will Rogers by P.J. O’Brien, page 22
