Astronomy Picture of the Day in the Classroom Jerry T. Bonnell & Robert J. Nemiroff (NASA/USRA) (Michigan Tech)

Abstract Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) at main address is being used as a tool for teaching astronomy in classrooms from grade school to college. Updated daily since 1995 June, APOD continues to maintain the largest annotated archive of diverse astronomy images on the internet. Mirror sites around the world translate APOD daily into Chinese, Czech, French, and Russian. APOD images may be used to illustrate astronomy lectures and present topical astronomy information. Techniques for incorporating APOD material into the average classroom are discussed.

Illustrate 4 The Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) web site has the largest diverse annotated astronomical picture archive on the web. Need an astronomy picture? Good chance APOD's got it. 4 Find the latest pictures; find the best pictures. APOD's archive is accessible through both an index and a search engine. 4 APOD features short, plain-English explanations. These explanations are appropriate for the non-science major student -- even basic terms are hyperlinked.

Illustrate 4 APOD is written and edited by professional astronomers. Both APOD authors are active researchers. APOD author JTB works at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. APOD author RJN is a professor at Michigan Tech and teaches introductory astronomy. 4 No advertising. APOD is not a commercial site. APOD is supported, in part, by NASA and the NSF. 4 APOD is one of the most popular web sites in astronomy. Every Ivy League university has taught a course that has linked to the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD).

Illustrate your AAS Oral or Poster Presentation with an appropriate APOD. Free color APOD transparencies are available at the HEASARC Booth.
