Team Fischetti Insect Photography Rig – CDR Team Fischetti: Nafis Azad Brendan Kemp Rob Leveille

Team Fischetti Background  Basic DSLR camera is placed on the frame  Frame is either worn around the neck or mounted on a tripod  Camera is taken to a high insect traffic location  Insect flies into plane of focus, is detected by the photodiodes  Camera takes freeze-frame photo of the moving insect

Team Fischetti Social Implications  Proliferation of high-speed photography Ease of use makes insect photography techonologically accessible Low cost makes it financially accessible Effect similar to the availability of inexpensive, high- grade DSLRs  Availability of insect depictions for science Could easily be purchased by entomology departments Useful tool along with more expensive outfits Would allow for non-disruptive “capture” and identification Multiple units could be distributed for a lab class

Team Fischetti

System Specifications  Can capture fast-moving insects in flight Honeybee flies at 40 cm s -1 ( Baird et al, 2005 ) Volume of focus is narrowest at 7cm Circuit reaction time should be 175 msec  Easy to use System should work with minimal knowledge required Frame should be durable and easily reconfigurable Frame should be portable and easy to carry  Inexpensive System should be an easily attainable accessory, with no extra major purchases

Team Fischetti Pricing  Unit Pricing Lasers and Photodiodes: $16 Microcontroller and Logic gates: $10 IR Transmitter: $17 Circuit Board and Frame: $10 Total: $53  1K Pricing Lasers and Photodiodes: $12 Microcontroller and Logic gates: $5 IR Transmitter: $12 Circuit Board and Frame: $10 Total: $39

Team Fischetti Demonstration of Achievements  Can capture fast-moving insects in flight Circuit reaction time is 175 msec  Easy to use System works with little to no tech knowledge Frame is durable and easily reconfigurable Frame is portable (2 lbs) and easy to carry  Inexpensive 1k price is: $39
