Exploring Nontraditional Careers Barbara Ellis ETT 536 Web-Based Learning

Problem/Justification ► When exploring career options, many people, particularly young people, limit their career choices just because they think the job they want is meant for a person of a specific gender. ► One option many people overlook in their job search is nontraditional employment.

Project Objectives After visiting this WBL module, the individual will ► Broaden their perspectives on career opportunities. ► Will understand the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to pursue a nontraditional career. ► Will explore how his or her innate interests and abilities might work in nontraditional career opportunity. ► Will know where to go for further information or training.

Design Metaphor Visual and Organizational ► Graphic elements such as photos will show men or women successfully operating in nontraditional occupations. ► Familiar occupations will be presented in a new context so that the individual will have easy access to information while gaining personal feedback.

Project Learning Activities ► Interest Surveys—Learner will discover how his or her innate skills and abilities might mesh with what is typically considered a “male occupation” or a “female occupation.” ► Learner will choose a NTO of interest and using hyperlinks explore the skills and abilities needed and discover whether his or her interests and abilities coincide. ► Learners will interact with other career explorers either through collaborative feedback or online discussion.

Project Learning Activities (continued) ► Learners will access hyperlinks to national and local organizations that promote NTOs and gender equity. ► Learners will access sites that provide information on training, apprenticeships or education. ► Learners will view an online interview with a person currently in a NTO discussing problems and opportunities.
