Presentation Outline Inserting Movies and Animations Into Your Presentations Using Progressive Disclosures and Slide Transitions How to Create and Work with Simple Graphs Other Neat PowerPoint Tips and Tricks

Inserting Movies Into PowerPoint Insert > Movies & Sounds > Movie from file or clip organizer Usually best to save your movie on your hard drive. Do you want movie to play automatically or manually (manually is most common, plays when you click it). Most common file extensions are.AVI or.WMV, but there are many Occasionally one file format won’t play on PowerPoint, so try converting to another format. If problems still persist, it is likely due to codec problems within that format. Then Hyperlink the file by typing link in the text, highlight the word link, type CTRL + K, browse to the file to be shown, highlight it, and click enter.

Animation Progressive Disclosure What is it? Flying bullets or flying text Can have all text appear at once, or line by line, bullet by bullet, section by section Why do it? Gives presenter control over the pace of the presentation Adds motion or flow to a presentation Animation tends to capture audience’s attention

How To Do A Progressive Disclosure Type text Click in first line of text, click Slide Show > Custom Animation > Add Effect (i.e., wipe from left). Each effect is assigned a number to the left of the text. Modify the effect settings in the Custom Animation pane (speed, direction, etc.) To dim text color, right click on the line in the custom animation pane and choose Effect Options. Select dimming color by using the “After Animation” menu.

Page Transitions Select all slides or just the few that you want to apply transitions to Click Slide Show > Slide transition Use Transition menu to select transition style and modify speed and sound This is easiest to do from the slide sorter view

Using Clip Art Insert > picture > clip art Or select “from file” to insert photos or clip art you have saved to your hard drive. From the clip art menu, click “Clips Online” to search for free downloadable images on Microsoft’s Image gallery. To modify a clip art image Right click on the image > Edit Picture > accept conversion to PowerPoint image. From the draw menu click “ungroup”. Click to select portions of the image to modify. Select all image portions and click “group” in Draw menu when you’re done.

Custom Animation Animating an Object Right Click on image > Custom Animation > Add Effect Ex: Entrance Modify speed, direction, timing from menu Use menu to add motion paths, enhancement, etc. CLICK YOUR MOUSE NOW TO SEE ANIMATION Inserting Animated object Download animated image from Clips Online Insert > Movies & Sounds > select animated clip ** Clip will animate in Slideshow view but not in normal view. To be sure your clip is animating, toggle to slideshow view to see slide.

Inserting A Bar Chart Insert > Chart, or click chart icon from standard menu above. PowerPoint will automatically link to Excel and display a sample chart and datasheet. Edit the datasheet with your own figures or cut and paste your own datasheet into this form. Colors are automatically assigned and can easily be modified within the chart menu.

Converting Bar Chart to Other Chart Types Bar chart is the default chart type. Convert to any other chart type by doing the following: Double click anywhere in the chart. You will see that the menu options at the top of the screen change. Click Chart > Chart type Chart type menu offers many chart options such as pie, line and scatter charts. To see what your data will look like in each format, click the “Press and Hold to View Sample” button.

Customizing Your Charts Double click anywhere in chart to obtain Excel menu options Chart > chart options Modify title, axes, legends and plot area features such as gridlines Double click anywhere in the chart area to modify specific components of the chart A dialog box in the menus above identifies the specific component you have highlighted, such as data series, category axes, value axes, etc. Double click on the specific component and a dialog box appears offering modification options for that component.

Other Neat PowerPoint Tips and Tricks Rehearsing and timing your presentation Slide show > Rehearse Timings A small timer will appear in the upper left hand corner of slide show view. It times each slide advance. **Remember to answer NO, do not save timings when you exit this feature. If you answer YES, timings will be applied to each slide and presentation will advance automatically. If you made this error, remove preset timings by clicking Slide Show > Set Up Show > change advance slides option to “manually” instead of “use timings if present”.

Other Neat PowerPoint Tips and Tricks Compressing Large Files Use utility like NXPowerLite Right Clicking If in doubt on what to do, click the right mouse button. This opens up a dialog box that gives you common Windows and PowerPoint commands.
