Footer 1 LIGO Hanford pursues outreach goals that are similar to the SEC’s. LHO serves the general public, school groups, school teachers and university students School field trips Special interest programs (Cub Scout astronomy pin) Public astronomy eventsOff-site activities The construction of Advanced LIGO adds a new dimension to a LIGO visitor experience

Footer 2 15 permanently mounted exhibits add hands-on flavor to school field trips, teacher workshops and family events LIGO Hanford exhibits and field trip activities are correlated to Washington State science instructional standards.

Footer 3 LIGO is a member of the I2U2 Collaboration, an NSF- funded effort to provide large-project data sets to students and teachers for science research The LIGO e-Lab is now in the third year of a three- year cycle of field testing The e-Lab includes a full suite of paperless server- side features such as pre- and post-tests, an online student logbook and tools for generating online interactive posters. Recruiting teachers for training and classroom implementation is the biggest challenge going forward. The August 23, 2011 Virginia earthquake as seen on a LIGO Hanford seismometer via the I2U2 Web interface

Footer 4 Teacher training: LIGO Hanford has collaborated on the Southeast WA Math Science Partnership (MSP) program since MSP partners include Educational Service District 123, WSU Tri-Cities, Columbia Basin College and the Pasco and Othello School Districts. LHO Outreach Summary, 9/2010 – 8/2011: Total contacts = 11,000 (3500 on-site, 7500 off-site Teacher training contacts = 175 Number of outreach activities = 225 Professional papers/presentations = 2 ~35 teachers participated in the 2011 MSP Summer Academy at LHO. The MSP focuses on improving teachers’ understanding of the nature of scientific inquiry.
