Easier, ‘friendlier’access to information (Recommendation 2.d) Dennis Ogg, Donnice Cochenour, Amy Hoseth, Cristi Macwaters

Analysis  Goal of the Discover Tool  Local Databases  Remote Databases  Web Scale Discovery

Local Databases  Complete control of data and user interface.  Relatively complete understanding of the metadata.  Can account for local nuances.  Relatively fast.  Limited amount of objects and metadata

Remote Databases (Most journal articles are found using this method.)  Remotely indexed data  Several different databases used for searching  Native interfaces for searching  Don’t own the metadata

Federated Searching (Searching multiple database at one time through a single interface)  Complicated, cumbersome and slow.  Data isn't normalized.  Relevancy ranking isn't done the same way.  Merging results is complicated.

Web Scale Discovery (Various individual sets of metadata loaded to one central database.)  What is it  Usually provided as service  Data all in one place  Relatively quick  Contains local metadata from other participants

Action Items  Investigate Web Scale Discovery products  Investigate loading more data into the Discovery Tool  Investigate solutions for improving Federated searching  Continue to interact with campus to get feedback
