DARPA Powerpoint Capture Christopher Hylands Jon Forrest, John Reekie, Mary Stewart, Aaron Walburg

11/3/99 Goals u Capture PowerPoint presentations and make them available via the web for viewing later s Video s Audio s Synchronized slide flips s PDF and HTML versions as well

11/3/99 Screen Shot

11/3/99 Machine Layout Screen Screen Presenter PC Encoder PC Video Audio Network Projector

11/3/99 Real Presenter u Combines video image and slide into a Real video stream s Can’t change the slides after the capture

11/3/99 PowerPoint 97 u PowerPoint 97 reads s.ppt file that contains the slides s.nse file that contains the name of the encoder machine u Windows Media Encoder reads s.asd file that lists the codecs to use and the.asf output file u.asf files contain the audio, video and the slide flips u PowerPoint sends URL events over the network to the encoder, the events are encoded in the.asf file

11/3/99 PowerPoint 97 problems u The URL events are encoded in such a way that they cannot be edited - Microsoft uses an unpublished API to get these Events into the asf file. s There is a public event API, but it stores all the events in a header at the start of the.asf file, which will not work for us events on the fly u GUI is hard to use - we need to click ‘use this.nse file with this presentation’ every time

11/3/99 PowerPoint 2000 u Need to upgrade - ppt 97 and ppt 2k file format is the same, but animations sometimes are reversed u ppt2k include two types of presentation capture facilities s Self broadcast to up to 10 users under NT Workstation s Connect to a remote encoder (like what we do with ppt97)

11/3/99 PowerPoint 2000 Problems u Never able to connect to a remote encoder u Remote encoder _must_ by Windows NT Server (or maybe Windows 2k Server?) u Self broadcast html is viewable only by Internet Explorer u Too many dialog boxes (do you really really want to...)

11/3/99 Problems during Capture u Chaos between talks s What talk are we on? Agenda changes and confusion s Encoder or Presenter machine crashes s File settings are wrong t Accidentally overwriting.asf file t Wrong address of the encoder t Wrong settings for codec u Presenters are late with slides - Ideally, all the talks are in one file. s Presenters interrupt, causing problems with the talks of others

11/3/99 Future Goals u Decrease time to web site - value of slides quickly decays u Encode in multiple bit rates for modem users at home u Use PowerPoint 2000 u Live broadcast (requires much more infrastructure) u UC Berkeley audio only Seminars u Audience amenities s Power strips in the audience s Network connections to offsite
