LATHROP Intermediate HIGH SCHOOL ORIENTATION Revused 3/18/09

Santa Ana Unified (SAUSD) has three graduation requirements: 1.The first requirement tells you what tests you need to pass. 1.All 8 th graders must pass the U.S. Constitution test. 2.In high school, the State requires you to pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). 2.The second requirement tells you how many classes you have to pass. 1.In Intermediate school you are required to pass 9 classes a year in order to promote. 2.High School also requires that you pass a certain number of classes. However, in high school they are called Credits and you must earn them over four years of high school. 3.The third requirement tells you what classes you must pass. These are called course requirements. High School Graduation Requirements

1. Pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) 1. English and 2. Math 2. Earn 220 credits. 3. Pass all required Classes 1. With letter grade D or better to graduate 2. With letter grade C or better to go to college What do I need to do to graduate?

1.The California High School Exit Exam is a state requirement; all high school students must pass this exam to earn a high school diploma. 2.CAHSEE consists of 2 tests 1.English Language Arts and 2.Mathematics 3.Students will have an opportunity to take a 1.Practice CAHSEE in 9 th grade 2.Real CAHSEE in 10 th grade 3.For non-passage of the CAHSEE on the first time, students will have to keep trying until they pass (perhaps in 11 th or 12 th Grade) High School Graduation Requirements CAHSEE

1.In high school 6 classes are taken per semester (2 semesters per year), just like in Intermediate school. 2.Each class is worth 5 credits. 1.5 credits are earned for each class passed with a grade of A, B, C, or D. 2.0 credits will given for F letter grade. 3.Let’s do some math! 6 Classes X 5 Credits 30 credits per Semester X 2 semesters per year 60 credits per year X 4 years 240 credits 4.Students are required to earn 220 credits (44 classes) in four years of high school. Grade placement is determined by the amount of credits that have been earned. CLASS STANDING 9 TH Grade Freshman=0-45 Credits 10 th GradeSophomore=50-95 Credits 11 th GradeJunior= Credits 12 th Grade Senior=160+ Credits 2 nd Graduation Requirement=220 Credits (44 Classes) High School Credit System CLASS STANDING

High School Graduation Requirements What courses do you need to pass? English 40 credits (4 years) Math 30 credits Algebra 1 & Geometry Science 20 credits (2 years) Social Science 30 credits (3 years) Foreign Language 20 credits (2 years) Visual and Performing Arts (i.e. dance, drama, theater or music) 10 credits (one year) P.E./Sports 20 credits (2 years) Electives 50 credits Total Credits: 220  Students must pass all course requirements to earn a HS diploma.  Any course requirement that is failed must be repeated and until passed.

THE A-G COLLEGE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS The A-G / College Entrance Requirements are high school classes that students must complete (with a grade of C or better) to be eligible for admission to the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU). The purposes of the A-G / College Entrance Requirements are to ensure that entering students: Can take and pass first year college classes at UC and CSU without remediation. Have learned the skills and subject knowledge that will allow them to succeed in a rigorous learning environment. Have attained essential critical thinking and study skills.

COLLEGE A-G REQUIREMENTS Courses required for admission to the University of California and California State University A. History/Social Science 2 Years One year of U. S. History or one-half year of American Government/Civics and one year of World History/Cultures/Geography. B. English 4 Years College Preparatory English C. Mathematics 3 Years (4 years recommended) Algebra and above D. Laboratory Science 2 Years (3 years recommended) Lab science in at least two of these three areas: Biology, Chemistry, or Physics E. Foreign Language 2 Years (3 years recommended) Two years of the same language F. Visual and Performing Arts 1 Year Dance, Drama/Theater, Music, and Visual Arts G. College Preparatory Elective 1 Year One additional year chosen from the above A-G subject areas.

You are responsible to graduate high school, are you on the right track? You are on the right track to high school if you are currently Enrolled and passing English 8 BK or H with a C or better Passing Math 8 with a C or better Passing Science 8 with a C or better Passing Social Studies with a C or better Enrolled and passing an Elective class (Music, Art, Technology, AVID, or Dance) with a C or better You are not yet on a good path If you are enrolled in Read180 or System44, your goal is to exit Intervention classes and be enrolled in English 8 BK.
