Understand the Pain Grocery Shopping –Too much time and effort –Likely to miss out on key items The New Era Ushered in by Smart kitchen –No more shopping lists –Instant notifications and status updates on the ‘inventory’ in the household onto your smart phone/ PDA

And off we go… to Giant Eagle!!

Before: Not really sure… After: Knows exactly what he wants He bought the milk! His Smart phone/ PDA Smart kitchen to the rescue! I saw a gallon of milk in the fridge, I won’t be needing one… Do I have cheese at home??

How it works! System –Smart phone/ PDA with Docking Station –RFID reader reads tags off the products in the kitchen and updates the ‘status’ of the kitchen. –Smart phone/ PDA generates a shopping list based on ideal stock and current kitchen status Assumptions –All the products will be RFID tagged replacing currently used UPC Barcodes

Competition Biggest Threat –Customers themselves Similar products –Smart Fridge by LG Built in LCD TV Recipe Book Internet Connectivity Disadvantages –Have to put in all the product information manually  –Manages only the refrigerator contents Web-enabled fridges by Samsung and Electrolux

Requirements Make an accurate shopping list within 30 seconds of taking the smart phone off the dock Modularity –Would consider the product successful if customers can incorporate the device with minimal adjustments to their existing appliances

Parts Hardware –RFID related Inexpensive RFID reader modules Compatible Antennae –to boost the range of the readers to ~ 2 m Passive RFID Tags –Programmable to put the relevant product information –Smart phone/ PDA –Docking Station Software –Networking software for Smart Phone /PDA Protocols: –RFID –Bluetooth Additional Bells and Whistles –High resolution camera to send latest pictures of the interior of the fridge –Come up with the fastest path of going around the grocery store while shopping
