CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Office of Research Queensland University of Technology CRICOS No J ERA Update January 2009

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Office of Research Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) Initiative Developed by the Australian Research Council (ARC) in consultation with National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) and the Indicators Development Group (IDG). “…aims to identify and promote excellence across the full spectrum of research activity, including discovery and applied research, in Australia’s higher education institutions.” Compare Australia’s university research efforts against international benchmarks Create incentives for improving the quality of research Identify emerging research areas and opportunities for further development

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Office of Research How? Across eight clusters of disciplines (four digit FOR codes) the evaluation of: Indicators of research quality – ranked outlets, citation analysis and peer-reviewed research income Indicators of research volume and activity – total research outputs and research income Indicators of recognition – esteem measures Indicators of research application – research commercialisation income and other applied measures

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Office of Research Clusters Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences (PCE) Humanities and Creative Arts (HCA) Engineering and Environmental Sciences (EE) Social, Behavioural and Economic Sciences (SBE) Mathematics, Information and Communication Sciences (MIC) Biological Sciences and Biotechnology (BSB) Biomedical and Clinical Research (BCR) Public and Allied Health and Health Services (PAHHS)

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Office of Research FOR-08 Field of Research (FOR-08) Codes are the hierarchical classification of research set out by the Australian and New Zealand Standards of Research Classifications. For example: 03 – Chemical Sciences – Analytical Chemistry – Analytical Spectrometry – Electroanalytical Chemistry – Inorganic Chemistry – Bioinorganic Chemistry – f-Block Chemistry ERA requires all researchers and research outputs to be assigned to a four digit FOR code (no more than three per output or against individual researchers).

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Office of Research FOR-08 (continued) QUT has been collecting RFCD codes for many years. These were able to be translated to FOR-08 codes (based on a conversion table provided by the ABS). Approx publications and grants which fall into the ERA submission group are still needing FOR-08 codes. Research Data and Platform team providing a “best fit” to researchers for signoff shortly. Essential moving forward that everything is assigned a correct FOR-08 code.

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Office of Research So Far… We have: Participated in trials Provided feedback on behalf of QUT and the ATN Successfully uploaded data via the SEER system Been diligent about collecting data Contributed to the ranked journal list Developed the Research Activity Database so researchers can be more active in recording their research outputs Commenced work with ePrints to ensure publications are stored in a central repository Worked to collect Pre-QUT research outputs from eligible researchers who meet the census date (at QUT on March )

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Office of Research The Scope ERA Team released their Draft ERA Submission Guidelines for Clusters One and Two and the SEER Technical Specifications in late January. We have a few weeks to prepare a comment to these draft documents. Assuming the Draft version will not significantly change, we are looking at… Submission of both PCE and HCA clusters Submission in late April-early May

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Office of Research The Scope (continued) Measure Types: Research Outputs ( ) o A1, B, C1, E1 (for both PCE and HCA) o HCA specific – visual art, textual work (novels, art reviews etc), live performances, recorded performances, exhibitions or events Esteem Measures ( ) o Editorial role of A* or A ranked journal, o Contribution to a prestigious work of reference o Curatorial role of a prestigious event o Elected fellowship of a learned academy o Recipient of a nationally competitive research fellowship or of a prestigious prize or award Research Income ( ) o HERDC income as already reported Applied Measures ( ) o Patents, registered designs and research commercialisation income

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Office of Research Evaluation PCE will be measured by metrics such as citations data, journal rankings etc – quantitative indicators which are relevant to the discipline. HCA will be also be measured according to quantitative information by also by peer review. Each HEP will be asked to submit a 20% sample to the ARC via an institutionally supported repository (ePrints) for peer review. Thus we need to make sure that these are entered into ePrints accordingly. ePrints can support many format types (including video and image) and will also be used to store supporting context statements required to accompany each piece.

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Office of Research Submission Process Submission is done via the SEER systems (ERA’s supporting IT system). QUT has developed a system which pulls data from RAD (QCR) and exports it in a format which is uploaded to SEER. Base publications data MUST be entered in RM to populate RAD! The ARC will then append bibliometric data (including citation information from external citation data supplier) to the submission and then begin breaking down the submissions into Units of Evaluations (assigning tasks to expert reviewers and peer reviewers). Peer reviewers will access our sample of research outputs via the ePrints repository. Once final evaluation outcomes for each Unit of Evaluation are agreed upon, the ARC will be provided with a report. The ARC will then publically release the outcomes aggregated to a national level.

CRICOS No J a university for the world real R Office of Research What your researchers can do Keep up to date with ERA announcements Consider which journals and conferences they submit your research to Ensure all publications are put on to QUT ePrints Ensure all HCA specific research outputs are entered on ResearchMaster Develop your Category 1 grants profile Collaborate with international researchers Check their research profile in RAD Start collating information around their Esteem Factors and adding this to RAD
