The Prayer of the Overcomer John 17

Prayer possibly in the upper room John 17 is certainly the “Holy of Holies” of the gospel record. Jesus is the Overcomer. He was not a victim, but the Victor. The word “world” is used 19 times in his prayer. 1-5: Jesus first prayed for Himself 6-19: He prayed for His disciples that the Father would keep them and sanctify them 20-26: He prayed for us and the whole church that we might be unified in Him and one day share His glory Why Jesus pray this prayer? He was preparing Himself for the suffering that lay ahead

We Share His Life (17:1-5) The Lord prayed for Himself, but it wasn’t selfish prayer Jesus’ burden was the glory of God and this glory means His finished work on the cross. Jesus prayed for help to glorify His name. “Hallowed be thy name” in the first petition in the Lord’s Prayer (Matt. 6:9). “Father, the hour is come” beginning at John 2:4; divine timetable “My times are in thy hand” Ps. 31:15 17:5 – His preincarnated glory with the Father, the glory He laid aside when He came to earth via virgin birth. 17:4 – His work and life glorified the Father.

In both verses Jesus asked that He receive the glory again so He can glorify the Father in heaven as He returns. Glory is used 8 times in verses 1-5. He glorified the Father in miracles (2:11, 11:40) and through suffering and death (John 12:23- 25;13:31-32) From human point of view Calvary was a revolting display of man’s sin. From God’s point of view the cross revealed and magnified the grace and glory of God “I have finished the work which though gavest to me to do” (v. 4)

Works: His messages & miracles (5:17-19), the training of the disciples, and His sacrifice on the cross “Give” is mentioned at least 17 times Seven times, Jesus states that the believers are the Father’s gift to His Son (17:2, 6, 9, 11-12, 24) Jesus as the Father’s gift to us (John 3:16) Eternal (everlasting) life is important theme in John’s gospel Mentioned 17 times

Eternal life is God’s free gift to those who believe on His Son (John 3:15-16, 36; 6:47; 10:28) What is eternal life? It is knowing God personally. Having a personal relationship with God, through faith in Jesus It is not enough to believe in God; the devil also believe (James 2:19) People can be devoutly religious and still don’t know God (John 8:12ff) Eternal life is a gift we receive by admitting we are sinners, repenting, and believing on Jesus Christ and Him alone, not by earning by character, conduct, and works (Eph. 2:8-9)

Father answered Jesus’ prayer and gave Him glory. He is the glorified man, the God-man. Because we share His life we are overcomers. “Whatsoever is born of God overcome the world; and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. (John 5:4) “And they overcame him (Satan) by the blood of the Lamb” (Rev. 12:11)

We Know His Name (John 17:6-12) Jesus has given them the revelation of the Father’s name (17:6) The Great ”I am” (Ex. 3: I am the Bread of life, etc. “Father” 53 times in John 13-17, 122 times in John’s gospel. Messages to Jews: Father sent Jesus, He was equal to the Father, His words & works came from the Father.

Name refers to nature, because names often were given to reveal something special about the nature of the person bearing the name. For example, Jacob means “to take by the heel” (Gen. 25:6). Isaac means laughter (Gen. 21:6) because he brought joy to Abraham & Sarah. Jesus reveals as the Savior (Matt. 1:21). “I have manifested thy name” mean I have revealed the nature of God. Jesus declared the Father (1:18) by words and deeds. The emphasis on the passage: safety of the believers. Safety depends on the nature of God. God keeps His own (11:12) “I kept in thy name” (12). Trinity is surely able to secure God’s people. The disciples belonged to the father by creation & covenant, but now they belonged to the Son.

Our security relies on the fact that we are here to glorify Him (17:10). “I am gloried in them” even when the disciples had failures and faults. Whatever God starts, He finishes (Phil. 1:6). God provides the divine resources for us to glorify Him and be fruitful. His word (7-8) Intercessory prayer (9), Jesus prayed for us. Fellowship of the church, “that they may be one as we are” (11).

No isolate believer in New Testament. The believer is secure in Christ for many reasons: Nature of God Nature of salvation The glory of God Intercessory ministry of Christ Judas? He was never one of His own (6:64-71). He was never cleansed (13:11) and he was never given to Christ (18:8-9). He was an example of an unbeliever who pretended to have salvation but was finally exposed as a fraud. He was not an example of a Christian who “lost his salvation”.

We Have His Word (17:13-19) “I have given them thy word (14). Father gave the words to the Son. Son (Jesus) gave them to the disciples who in turn passed them to us (2 Tim. 3:16, 2 Peter 1:20-21). How does the Word of God enable us to overcome the world? It gives joy and the joy give us strength (Neh. 8:10). Jesus depends on inward resources that were hidden from the world. We can have it through His Word. “Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart” (Jer. 15:16). “I rejoiced at thy word, as one findeth great spoil” (Ps. 119:162).

His word assures us of His love (17:4). The Word describes to us what the world is really like as well as exposing world’s deceptions. The world competes for the Father’s love (1 John 22:15-22). The worldly life is the neglect of God’s Word. D. L. Moody – “This book will keep you from sin or sin will keep you for this book.” God’s word is the light in the dark world. God’s Word imparts God’s power for holy living (15-17): sanctity. –We are in the world but not of the world, therefore, we must not live like the world. True sanctification (set apart for God) works through the ministry of God’s Word. “Now ye are clean through the words which I have spoken unto you” (15:3).

–God’s truth in 3 editions: His word (17:17), His Son (14:6), and His Spirit (1 John 5:6). Sanctification touches every part of the inner man. With the mind, we learn God’s truth With the heart, we love God’s truth With the will, we yield to the Spirit and live God’s truth daily. God’s Word gives us what we need to serve Him as witness in this world (18-19). Sanctification isn’t for a purpose of selfish enjoyment or boasting, but that we represent Christ in the world and win others to Christ. Jesus set Himself apart for us and now He set us apart for Him. We can overcome the world when we have the Word to enlighten us, enable us, and encourage us.

We Share His Glory (17:20-26) Jesus focuses our attention on the future. Jesus begins to pray for us who live for today and the church throughout the ages. After security and sanctity the burden of his prayer is unity. Oneness of the Father & Son. Christians may belong to different fellowships but they all belong to the Lord and each other. Spiritual unity

What is the basis for true Christina unity? The person and work of Jesus Christ and his glory (17:2-4). All true believers have God’s glory within no matter what they may look like on the outside (17:22). Christian harmony is based on the Spirit in the inner person. We will behold His glory in heaven (17:24). As we grow in the Lord, glory within begins to grow & reveal (1 Cor. 6:19-20, Matt. 4:16).

Impressions on the world: the way Christian love each other and live together in harmony “that the world may believe that thou has sent me” The lost world cannot see God, but they can see Christians. What they see in Christians is what they believe about God. i.e., love and unity or hatred and division. Some will believe because of our witness (17:20). Why should believers love one another and live in unity?

Same Savior, same glory, same heaven, same Father, same work, same truth even thou we may have different views of minor doctrinal matters, same examples Importance of truth and love in the church Truth and love must go together (Eph. 4:15) Truth without love is brutality. Love with truth is hypocrisy. The mind grows by taking in truth, but the heart grows by giving it in love Knowledge leads to pride (1 Cor. 8:1) and Love alone lead to wrong decisions (Phil. 1:9-10). Spiritual priorities in Savior’s heart: The glory of God, the sanctity of God’s people, and the unity of the church.
