ANNOUNCING TWO EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS  CACHE 1 and EURECHA 2 are jointly sponsoring two one- day workshops for academics immediately following the Chemical Engineering World Congress in Glasgow, Scotland on Friday July 15,  Both workshops will be held from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.  Participants will be expected to bring a notebook computer, and electrical outlets will be provided.  CD-ROMs 1 CACHE (Computer Aids for Chemical Engineering) 2 EURECHA (European Committee for Computers in Chemical Engineering Education)

ADVANCES IN EDUCATIONAL PROBLEM SOLVING by Prof. Mordechai Shacham Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel Prof. Michael B. Cutlip University of Connecticut, USA Expected Participants:  Faculty and Instructors who wish to utilize problem solving software and integrate effective numerical problem solving into their courses and their student projects.  Software will be provided to the participants for use on their notebook computers.

ADVANCES IN EDUCATIONAL PROBLEM SOLVING Outline  Nonlinear Equations  Ordinary Differential Equations  Multiple Linear, Polynomial, and Nonlinear Regressions  Nonlinear Programming Based on: Cutlip, M. B. and Shacham, M. Problem Solving In Chemical Engineering with Numerical Methods. 2 nd Ed. Prentice-Hall, Upper Saddle River, New-Jersey, November 2005

ADVANCES IN EDUCATIONAL PROBLEM SOLVING Contents of a Typical Section Production of Acetic Anhydride in a Tubular Reactor  Setting up the equations in Polymath and verifying their correctness  Exporting to Excel, using Aspen Properties for heat of reaction and heat capacity.  Solving ODE’s within Excel with the Polymath ODE_Solver Add-In for Excel.  Exporting to MATLAB, solving for different pressures and inert concentrations.

TEACHING PRODUCT AND PROCESS DESIGN by Prof. Warren D. Seider University of Pennsylvania, USA Prof. Daniel R. Lewin Technion, Israel Expected Participants:  Product and process design instructors, many of whom have not taught design before.  Experienced faculty who are being asked to teach design for the first time.  Experienced faculty who want to learn about product design and new approaches to teaching process design.

TEACHING PRODUCT AND PROCESS DESIGN Outline  Introduction, Design Process  Molecular Structure Design  Batch Process Synthesis  Role of Process Simulators (Continuous and Batch)  Heuristics for Process Synthesis  Equipment Sizing and Cost Estimation  Use of a Profitability Analysis Spreadsheet  Product Design and Manufacturing  Interaction of Process Design and Control Based on: Product and Process Design Principles: Synthesis, Analysis, and Evaluation (Seider, Seader, Lewin, Wiley, 2004)

EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS - REGISTRATION  CACHE 1 and EURECHA 2 are jointly sponsoring two one- day workshops for academics immediately following the Chemical Engineering World Congress in Glasgow, Scotland on Friday July 15,  Web Site for Registration:  Cost $300/participant less $50 if from CACHE or EURECHA Member Department. Thank You and See You in Glasgow
