How did it appear?  a lengthy dispute over whether Sydney or Melbourne should be Australia's national capital  selected in 1908 as a compromise  an international contest for the city's design  the Chicago architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin was chosen and construction commenced in 1913.

Where did it get its name? The Canberra region previously known as Limestone Plains. One of the main roads is named Limestone Avenue to commemorate this early name. The aboriginal word "Kamberra", spoken by tribes in the region, is thought to mean 'a meeting place'. A local wine company has used this name, with its wine range being called "Meeting Place". This icon represents meeting place (concentric circles) and journey path (lines). The meeting place is culturally a significant site to Aboriginal men and women. It is a place where Aboriginal people meet, gather around, sitting in circles...

What had come of it nowadays? So now it is located in the southeastern part of the country. It is the largest inland city in Australia and lies 300 kilometers southwest of Sydney and 650 kilometers northeast of Melbourne. It is laid out around an artificial lake.

Lake Burley Griffin Lake Burley Griffin was constructed in 1963 after the Molonglo River was dammed, and was named after Canberra's designer. Its surrounds, consisting mainly of parklands. Though swimming in the lake is uncommon, it is used for a wide variety of other activities, such as rowing, fishing, and sailing. It is possible to boat in the lake, and walk or skate around the 35km shoreline. Numerous important institutions, such as the National Gallery, National Museum, National Library, Australian National University and the High Court were built on its shores, and Parliament House is a short distance away.

Parliament House Parliament House is the meeting facility of the Parliament of Australia, opened on 9 May 1988 by Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia. Prior to 1988, the Parliament of Australia met in the Provisional Parliament House, which is now known as "Old Parliament House".

Austarlian War Memorial The memorial includes an extensive national military museum. The Australian War Memorial was opened in 1941, and is widely regarded as one of the most significant memorials of its type in the world. The Australian War Memorial consists of three parts - the Commemorative Area (shrine) including the Hall of Memory with the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier, the Memorial's galleries (museum) and Research Centre (records).

Anzac Day It is a national day of remembrance in Australia as well as in New Zealand, and is commemorated by both countries on 25 April every year to honour members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. It now more broadly commemorates all those who died and served in military operations for their countries. At the Australian War Memorial families often place artificial red poppies beside the names of relatives on the Memorial's Roll of Honour.

Black Mountain Tower Rising meters above the mountain summit, it is not only a landmark in Canberra but also offers panoramic views of the city and its surrounding countryside from an indoor observation deck, two outdoor viewing platforms and the tower's revolving restaurant. Black Mountain Tower (previously known as Telstra Tower and Telecom Tower) is a telecommunication tower that is situated above the summit of Black Mountain in Canberra.

National Gallery of Australia The National Gallery of Australia is the premier art gallery and museum in Australia, holding over 120,000 works of art. It was established in 1967 by the Government of Australia as a national public art gallery. National Museum As designed by architect Howard Raggatt, the museum building is based on a theme of knotted ropes, symbolically bringing together the stories of Australians. The building is meant to be the centre of a knot, with trailing ropes or strips extending from the building. It profiles 50,000 years of Indigenous heritage, settlement since 1788 and key events including Federation and the Sydney 2000 Olympics. The Museum holds the world's largest collection of Aboriginal bark paintings and stone tools.

So… Since then, Canberra has grown into a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with national attractions housing the heritage, history and national collections that make Canberra the home of the Australian story.
