Creating Electronic Pathfinders for the Library and Classroom Dr. Marilyn Shontz, Associate Professor Program in School and Public Librarianship Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ

Program Description: Electronic pathfinders are student self-directed learning tools, providing a much needed addition to our collection of individualized learning techniques. Learn what they are and how to make and use them! Category – Best Practices

Definition…. What is a Pathfinder? aka… Virtual Pathfinder Webliography Subject Guide Tracer Bullet Infinite Bibliography

A Pathfinder is an annotated list of print, media and electronic sources on a specific topic for a specific audience.

Lucile Fargo, in 1947 defined what she called “list-making”

Fargo stated…. “Certain points should always be borne in mind when compiling a bibliography for use by boys and girls...”

Her “Lists” were to be … 1. Selective, not extensive. 2. Reading difficulty should be indicated by some simple method. 3. Topical arrangement.

Also, “lists” should : use a simple form for entries, include call numbers, and use annotations to arouse interest and help students evaluate items

Purposes : 1. help students/patrons learn to search 2. provide a self-directed learning tool 3. provide appropriate topic resources 4. provide resources at appropriate levels 5. provide guidance in using resources.

A pathfinder is NOT --a bibliography -- a list or.. A place to find an answer Nor is it comprehensive.

Advantages Helps improve searching skills Helps improve evaluative skills -- encourages skepticism Developmentally appropriate Focused searching -- fewer and better results Electronic Pathfinders can be accessed from any computer -- home or library.

Advantages, cont. Identifies sources hard to find or easily overlooked, such as the Invisible Web Used effectively with thematic units Brings welcome attention to the library and its services Available print or online Great to use in collection development Flexibility -- adapt to any topic, group, library, school.

Disadvantages Time! To prepare, create, revise, update Keeping cited resources current Watching for new sources or content Locating and keeping elusive resources Identifying reading levels

Disadvantages, cont. If poorly done….. Too complex difficult to navigate confusing format Download time for hi-res graphics Dead links
