What Happens When Good Weather Goes Bad?. Storms  A Storm is a violent disturbance in the atmosphere  Cause sudden changes in air pressure  Cause rapid.
Science ~ chapter 8 weather
Weather Patterns. Air masses Changes in the weather are caused by movements of large bodies of air called air masses. Air masses usually cover thousands.

 Weather that causes damage and destruction  Comes in 3 basic forms, each an escalation of the previous  Thunderstorms  Tornadoes  Hurricanes.

Chapter 3 Weather Fronts and Storms
Severe Storms. Thunderstorms Occur in warm, moist air masses and along fronts. Sinking rain, cooled air, and strong updrafts of warm air cause strong.
STORMS STORMS.
Thunderstorms Severe Storms  A thunderstorm is a storm that generates lightning and thunder. Thunderstorms frequently produce gusty winds, heavy rain,
What comes to mind when you hear the term severe weather?
Pressure Systems Low pressure: an area where the atmospheric pressure is lower than the surrounding area Air rises then it cools and condenses Weather:
Large body of air with properties the same as the part of Earth’s surface it formed over. Can cover thousands of kilometers. A change in weather = movement.
Air Masses and Weather 17 Air Masses  Air Masses An air mass is an immense body of air that is characterized by similar temperatures and amounts of moisture.
Ch 20 Severe Weather. Storms and severe weather begin with WARM air rising. This LOW pressure and is considered UNSTABLE.
SEVERE WEATHER. What is a HURRICANE? *A large, swirling low-pressure tropical weather system that has wind speeds of at least 119 km/h. *Most powerful.
Atmosphere Vocabulary Part 2. 1.) Air Pressure – The force exerted by the weight of a column of air above a given point 2.) Pressure Gradient – the spacing.

WEATHER WORDS

THUNDERSTORM  A Disturbance in the Earth’s atmosphere that involves lightning and thunder

TORNADOES  A violent windstorm that spirals around a rotating column of air of low pressure and moves in a narrow path over land.  Usually occurs when a cold front overtakes warm air.  Occurs in the Midwestern and Southeastern United States.

FUNNEL CLOUD  A rapidly rotating cloud stretching vertically  When a funnel cloud comes in contact with the ground, it is considered a tornado.

VORTEX  The movement of a liquid or gas in a spiral around a central axis.

HURRICANE  A massive rotating storm that originates over tropical oceans and has sustained winds of over 75 miles per hour  Hurricanes are in the Atlantic Ocean  Storms are named using an alphabetized system  Hurricanes are the severest storm

EYE WALL  A ring of spiraling clouds and thunderstorms that whirl around the storms center and extend upward.

HURRICANE ALIASES  Hurricanes in the Pacific Ocean are called typhoons  Hurricanes in the Indian Ocean are called cyclones  Hurricanes in Australia are called willi-willies
