INTRODUCTION Pink and Say is a read aloud set in the 1860s. The focus of the story is a friendship between two Union soldiers during the Civil War.

Materials Pink and Say Reading notebook Pencil KWL graphic organizer Internet access PC with projection capability Inspiration Software Internet

Before you read Complete a KWL graphic organizer about the Civil War in Inspiration. Inspiration In your reader’s notebook, write a letter to the teacher relating a time you had to rely on a friend.

Buzz & Share Buzz your letter with a partner. “Buzzing” is a technique where students sit knee to knee with a partner and read their letter. Share your KWL chart with the class. “Sharing” is a technique where students sit in a circle on a rug and share their thoughts.
