Drug Testing of Student Athletes An Internet Investigation Introduction Task Process Product Expected Evaluation Adapted from:

Introduction Task Process Product Expected Evaluation Investigative studies and news reports have shown an increase in the use of anabolic steroids in professional and amateur athletics. In fact, your local Board of Education has recently discovered that the use of these drugs has now trickled down to high school and middle school athletes in your district who are looking for an edge over their opponents. After a review of local procedure, your Board of Education (BOE) has discovered that the district policy is lacking in guidelines specific to the testing of students for anabolic steroids that could enhance performance in athletic competition. As a result the Board wants to draft policy ASAP.

Task Introduction Task Process Product Expected Evaluation Realizing that this issue directly affects student-athletes, the Board has decided that a panel of students shall research the issue and make recommendations as to what type of policy the BOE should enact. Each panel will consist of three members and those members will need to produce a PowerPoint slide show that outlines their recommendations.

Process Introduction Task Process Product Expected Evaluation In your groups of three, assign these three jobs: Investigative Reporter: Will research current drug testing policies in other organizations. Medical Consultant: Will research what anabolic steroids are and what they do to the body. Statistical Analyst: Will research the use of steroids by adolescents. Based on the research of each individual member, the panel as a whole will reach a conclusion and make recommendations regarding how the BOE should address the issue of testing for steroid use by student athletes. This will include disciplinary measures to be taken if students test positive for steroids. Your teacher will provide you with resources to complete your research.

Product Expected Introduction Task Process Product Expected Evaluation Your group will need to submit a report of information from each student, including recommendations to the BOE.

Evaluation Introduction Task Process Product Expected Evaluation Your project will be graded based on a rubric which will be provided to you. Make sure you have included all of the required materials listed in the rubric.
