Beliefs We believe something is true (may or not be) Not always logical Sometimes kept regardless of evidence to the contrary.
Opinion Narrower in focus than a belief Can be called a tentative belief (gut feeling) Best judgement of a particular situation
Attitude A system of beliefs organized around a particular subject. Affects the way a situation is perceived and reacted to. Evidenced in the way one behaves in regard to a situation or subject.
Attitude continued Our own attitude is less apparent than the attitudes of other people. Attitudes are derived from different sources and held with different degrees of strength and salience (personal relevance). Influenced by experiences Attitudes can be changed if person is aware of them.
Values Deeply ingrained The degree of importance attached to certain aspects of life. Common denominator in the attitude system Goals set for ourselves Central to who we are Influences our communication and behavior
Self Concept Who and what we subconsciously think we are. Shapes destiny, influences significant choices Affects feelings and behaviors
Self Esteem The evaluative component of our self- concept. The individual looks at all of the items in the self concept and decides their own overall “goodness”.
