Family Friendly Policies Approved May 29, 2008 Part-time tenure track and tenured appointments Extension of the tenure-earning period Modified Duties

Part-time tenure track Tenure-track faculty may request a part-time appointment to balance work and family for any of the following reasons: –Arrival or care of a child –Care of a family member or member of the immediate household –Personal circumstances related to the health of the faculty member

Guidelines Only “term” appointments are available. Term appointments can be from one term (or the equivalent) up to two years. Term appointments can be renewed.

Extension of the Tenure-Earning Period Reasons to Request an Extension: Non-professional circumstances that have had a significant impact on the faculty member’s productivity Arrival or care of a child, care of a family member or member of the immediate household, or personal circumstances related to the health of the faculty member

Tenure-Earning Guidelines Extensions are granted in one-year increments, with a maximum extension period of 2 years. Requests need to be made within a year of the qualifying event or extenuating circumstances. Requests need to be made prior to departmental deadlines for submission of materials. Requests are made to the department chair with approval by the dean and provost required.

Tenured Faculty Guidelines Tenured faculty may request a part-time appointment for the following reasons: –To balance work and family (arrival or care of a child, care of a family member or member of the immediate household, or personal circumstances related to the health of the faculty member) –To participate in professional practice (i.e., entrepreneurial activity outside of university responsibilities) –To participate in community or public service

Modified Duties Defined as a modified workload and flexible schedule for a set period of time (one semester or the equivalent) Can be requested by a tenure-earning or tenured faculty Reasons may include birth or adoption of a child, severe illness of an immediate family member or member of the immediate household, or issues of personal health Arrangements are agreed upon by faculty member and department chair with final approval by dean.
