A new use of the catalogue to support learning: full text exams in the Politechnics Library Teresa Malo de Molina Universidad Carlos III de Madrid

The beginning of the project Exams loan: a previous service from the Students Association Lines of collaboration: Students Association gets the exams from the teachers Library scans the exams Library puts the exams in a full text server Library integrates the exams in the OPAC Library and Student Association diffuse the new service Everything depends on teachers gave the exams voluntarily

Previous needs To design a system to integrate the exams in the OPAC To have a full text server To design a system to identify the full text files To scan the exam collection of the Student Association To stablish the procedure to recive the future exams To integrate the exams in the virtual campus like any other learning object

Integrating in the OPAC It was neccesary to create a specific NON MARC format with special searching fields It was neccesary to create a new search into the library information option

Creating the new format We create the exam format with the following fields: TITULA: Degree ASIGNA: Subject CONVOCA: Date CURSO: Course CUATRIMES: Semester CLAVEASIG: Subject Key PROFESOR: Teacher 856: Text of the Exam

Creating the new format To create the new fields, you have to do something before: To creat the new labels like ENTRY IDs: TITULA (Degree), ASIGNA (Subject), CURSO (Course), CUATRIMES (Semester), CONVOCA (Date), CLAVEASIG (Subject Key) and PROFESOR (Teacher) like simple Entry IDs and EXAMEN-FULL and EXAMEN-TEMP like Entry IDs Synonime to be chosen like visual formats with or without the field CLAVEASIG (Subject Key) To create the new keyword indexes for TITULA (Degree), ASIGNA (Subject), CONVOCA – in which you can access to CURSO (Course), CUATRIMES (Semester) and CONVOCA (Date) – and PROFESOR (Teachaer)

Creating the new search We have created Exams like a new option into Library Information, in the same way that we have designed the reading lists To do so, we have created a new element in the throught the opac manager that we have called EXAMENES

Creating the new search We have defined this element like catalogue access With the search qualifier: format Examen Sort by title And with the following search fields: Word or phrase Degree Subject Course Semester Date Teacher

Creating the new search * Name : EXAMENES * Description : Examenes * Element Number : 1374 * User Level : EXTENDED PUBLIC * Access Code : NONE * Status : Available * Icon Name : NONE * Instructions : NONE * Display Instructions : NO * GUI Help Number : NONE * Heading : Examenes * Clients : ALL * Type : Catalog Access * Initial Operation : Search * Presentation : Labelled Fields * Label 1 : Palabra o frase * Search Icon 1 : WORDPHRA * Keyword Index 1 : GENERAL * Browse Index 1 : SUBJECT * Thesaurus 1 : GENERAL * Special processing 1 : Title Processing * Search Statement 1 : NONE * Search Operator 1 : AND * Label 2 : Titulacion * Search Icon 2 : NONE * Keyword Index 2 : TITULA * Browse Index 2 : TITLE * Thesaurus 2 : GENERAL * Special processing 2 : Title Processing * Search Statement 2 : NONE * Search Operator 2 : AND * Label 3 : Asignatura * Search Icon 3 : NONE * Keyword Index 3 : ASIGNA * Browse Index 3 : TITLE * Thesaurus 3 : GENERAL * Special processing 3 : Title Processing * Search Statement 3 : NONE * Search Operator 3 : AND * Label 4 : Curso * Search Icon 4 : NONE * Keyword Index 4 : CONVOCA * Browse Index 4 : SUBJECT * Thesaurus 4 : GENERAL * Special Processing 4 : NONE * Search Statement 4 : NONE * Search Operator 4 : AND * Label 5 : Cuatrimestre * Search Icon 5 : NONE * Keyword Index 5 : CONVOCA * Browse Index 5 : SUBJECT * Thesaurus 5 : GENERAL * Special Processing 5 : NONE * Search Statement 5 : NONE * Search Operator 5 : AND * Label 6 : Convocatoria * Search Icon 6 : NONE * Keyword Index 6 : CONVOCA * Browse Index 6 : SUBJECT * Thesaurus 6 : GENERAL * Special Processing 6 : NONE * Search Statement 6 : NONE * Search Operator 6 : AND * Label 7 : Profesor * Search Icon 7 : NONE * Keyword Index 7 : PROFESOR * Browse Index 7 : AUTHOR * Thesaurus 7 : AUTHORS * Special processing 7 : Author Processing * Search Statement 7 : NONE * Search Operator 7 : AND SEARCH QUALIFIERS * Library : NONE * Format : EXAMEN * Home Location : NONE * Item Language : NONE * Item Type : NONE * Item Category1 : NONE * Item Category2 : NONE * Publication Year : NONE * Sort By : TI

Search results We have designed a new format in the search result too, with the following data: Subject Degree Date URL (SUBJECT) (DEGREE) (DATE)

The future We have in this moment exams We want to open this service to other degrees We want to include this service into the virtual classroom of every subject in our university
